forged knives vs stock removal

Wow Ed, yer awfel smart! I agree with ya, and have learnt sumpin too! Fer the rest of yall, git Ed Fowlers video and see how the grain flows in a piece of forged steel. Ron

Ed, thanks for the specifics. How do you heat treat the blade after forging? I have spoke with a few people who will proceed identical to how they would with a stock removal blade after doing a full austenitizing. Wouldn't this destroy the grain alignment?

I think I prefer forged blade. I dont have any idea if one is better than the other. MaxTheKnife forged me a bowie size wharncliffe fighter. I went to pick it up, and he gave me a short forging demonstration. Watching it was pretty amazing. Watching a chunk of steel begin to look like a knife with each hit of the hammer is something you have to see to appreciate.

UPDATED and REVISED

The grain alignment arguement seems to make sense, but I'm curious, what causes the grains to follow any sort of pattern or alignment in the first place? Does it have anything to do with the magnetic properties or the crystalline structure of carbides or what?
