made this marlinspike today in the old mans school shop forge. Basic steel, drawn down to a taper point and curved slightly, then ground the handle area square. Smoothed and polished with 400, 800, 1000 and 1200 grit 3m autobody paper, and then wiped clean with solvent / rag and waxed with beeswax and a rag.

its big and beefy, for pushing/wedging/prying open tough braided ropes or working knots loose. One can also hammer it thru the tough stuff, i beveled the end to allow this

Looks similar to a wand a carved for my son a few years back when Harry Potter first came out. Took forever and it was made out of wood. Interesting to see how similar something looks from a forge. About what hardness do you think it is? What kind of steel?

traditionally, yes..... :)

but if you look at the one i made, all the super smooth polished parts are ABOVE the forging marks........the marlinspike glides thru rope strands like a well lubed lady of the night.

plain ol rod stock from the school supply. Hard enough to drive thru wood, aluminum plate. hard enough that i ate thru a 6" grinder wheel while squaring off the handle flats.
