Forged seax

Dan, that is a nice curvy hamon :) Is the line plain, or do you see a lot of "activity" in it? Did you water or oil quench this one?

thanks,
stevo

oil-quench....if I had done it in water, it would look like a banana....:D :p

I haven't fully "revealed" the line well enough to have a detailed look at it. I'll post pics when I finish them up.

Based on some of what is being discussed here. If you took an HI khuk and removed the mirror finish and gace it sort of a nihonto type polish would a hamon show up? I am guessing a definite could be.

You would get a quench line, but it won't necessarily be a hamon line which is curvy and made by using clay.

Here are some pics for comparison - etched a few this morning.

I'm really liking this "antiquing" finish I've been experimenting with...

I put a high polish on one of my khuks and the hardening line showed up quite well but not as dark as when a blade is etched.

Dan... What did you do to get that kind of antiquing finish? I have a Bura M43 that I use and want to have look like that blade of yours. What do I need to do?

I'm not sure that the khuk steel will react the same. But what the heck, here's the recipe:

prep work - hand sanded from 220 to 600 grit

etch in 4:1 FeCl:H20 for a minute
Scrub with 0000 steel wool dunked in acetone
Wipe clean
Spray with Windex
Lightly polish with high grit polishing paper (1000+)
Wipe clean
Rinse in warm soapy water

Repeat as many times as needed.

This will be difficult with a khukuri - you'll need to tape over the bolster real good and dunk it in a large bucket of etchant, very carefully. Then sanding will be to be careful to not mess up the bolster, yet get as close as possible for a somewhat even finish.

I'd set aside about 4-5 hours to get the job done, more if you need "set up" time.

Yvsa - did you see the vid I made showing the quench line before etch? was your line similar to that one? What did you use to polish?
