Hello everyone, i have been lurking for awhile and finally decided to make an account to ask a few questions, which thanks to yall were answered and i have learned a lot from already. I made a few more knives and they came out much better than the previous ones. I am curious now to see what set ups yall are rocking, i have seen people posting about gas forges and propane forges, most of them homemade. Is there any suggestions for making a forge? Im sure yall have scripture on forges, and how to make them, but have yall used any commercially available forges? And my one big thing is a thermometer. I have not been able to find a thermometer that goes to 2000 degrees, i can only find them going up to about 500 or so. What thermometers do yall use?

As always, any help is greatly appreciated, Happy Halloween everyone!

Thermometers for high temps are called "Pyrometers".
There are lots of good manufactured forges. Mankel and NC Forge Co. are two popular types.
There are commercial (Auberins) and homemade temperature reading and other PID controlled pyrometer devices.
The stickies cover a lot of this.

I just finished up building this propane furnace for heat treating my blades. It could easily be modified to make a horizontal forge. I bought my DT2-7 Digital Pyrometer from Clay King. It will read up to 1999 degrees. It was $75 and it's been a good one.

Youtube is a great resource if you're looking at building your own forge. I started out HT'ing in a paint can forge which is a pain, but it's inexpensive to make and it gets you started quick.
