forges on ebay

the problem i see is that all you heat is going to go out the ends as its wide open. and for that kind of money you can build one or buy one from darren ellis. his forges are great. you want a round chamber not a square one as that will have bad hot spots.

JT,

sorry to ask such a stupid question but you mentioned "hot spots" is this a problem for only heat treating or for forging also? and if it is just a heat treating problem will putting a pipe in help that?

thanks

here is another question. if you have a forge regardless of shape with multiple burners arent you likely to have hot spots just because of burner placement?

I would say both because you want to control your tempature when heat treating and forging. I guess you could use a hot spot to your edvantage in getting a more local heat in just one area but then i would think you would want use one burner so you onley have one hot spot. what will happen is you forge will come up to temp and and the inside of the forge is say around 1600 deg where the hot spot could be around 2100 or so. so what happens is that if your blade is sitting in the forge on part will get way to hot before the rest of the blade reaches the temp you want. now if you constantley move your blade in and out you can get around it by spreading out the heat. but why, if you do a round forge and put the burner in on the side the flame spins around the inside getting rid of most of the hot spot problem. i can put a blade in and not worry about one section getting hotter then another part of the blade.

This is my forge. It is similar to the one on Ebay, but is round of course. It heats very evenly. There is no air being mixed with the fuel, so the ends need to be open. I hinged the front, and added a pyrometer.
