Question for the guys that run the blower type burners - do any of you use a regulator for the Propane? I'm currently running a venturi style burner but need to get more heat. I've got another forge that I'm setting up and would like to go with a blower. What I'm wondering is if I can use the same regulator that I'm using for the venturi burner for the blower burner. Or, do I need to install a needle valve between the regulator and the blower burner?

Thanks!

- Mike :)

I run a regulator and needle valve. You could put a manifold after the regulator and shut offs on the manifold so you could run one forge at a time.

Blown forge, hands down.

Mike is very rude and left me off the list of guys using the blower from Grant Sarver (Off Center Forge) :p

The damn blower is almost too strong...it's spendy, but worth it (IMHO).

I first used a little freon tank forge with a Ron Reil burner. It works very nice, was fairly inexpensive to build, and doesn't need electricity. But for welding it sucked. The flux doesn't really have anywhere to go and ate up the floor. I set it aside and planned on using it for heat-treating, but the big blown forge is more controllable and a much more even heat. So it was not only superior for welding, but for control of forging and heat-treating.

Now I have a digitally controlled salt bath for heat-treating, and it's fired in a blown forge....very similar to my vertical forge.

By the way, Plain 'Ol Bill built that first vertical for me...I couldn't have done it bymyself back then :)

Oh, Nick, I'm so sorry to forget ya. :(
Unfortunately, this forum doesn't offer the little emoticon to really apologize how I'd want to for my unforgiveable rudeness.... :D ;)

Hey, how's that subhilt coming, BTW? Wish ya could get to Bowie's for his Nov. 1-2 hammer-in.... gonna make me drive all the way to WA to see you guys in person, aren't ya???

You blokes seem to like the blower forges do you have any links to the sites.

Lack of knowledge leads to passed on lack of knowledge. The local masses here have been happy with venturi. Partly because they have been improved on the originals partly because they are better than turning a handle on my charcoal forge amd most important seems like no one knows any better. I have been happy to sing the praise for my little forge in the past. Now it is Time to have a look at some newer technology.

Reg,
here is a site to start your research of blown forges.

Personally, i'm going to build a horizontal forge with a blower on it. At the moment I have venturi similar to yours and a Fogg style, which is vertical, where I now do all my welding, I haven't dropped anything into it yet,,,,,but. That is why the horizontal.

Hope you find something down-under their.

Thanks for the link. The oxygen bollte sounds like a good idea.
I looked for off cuts of bore casing. I got 2 lengths, 16 inches long for $40. The company owner was quite helpfull it was friday afternoon and he said $40 to buy beer for the workers was all he wanted. It was 10 inch stainless steel bore casing. All the locals I know here use horrisontal. However the way we make them you can turn them vertical
for smelting brass etc.

I will not be upating any time soon but it is worth knowing. I have a new novice comming around to get started. When he gets the bug he will want his own forge. Rather than just pass on the old info I can give him the choice.

Thanks again. it is interesting stuff.

Reg
