Forges: Why a Horiztal vs vertical?

Blown uses less gas in my experience, But the venturi you can use any where. HEHE thought you could just build one......:D

I use a blown vertical, 16'' pipe with 1-1/2'' insulation. This big forge is overkill but I forge lots of damascus, works like a charm. I do feel smaller is better and uses less gas.

Don Fogg forges swords in a small vertical, 10'' pipe with 1'' insulation.

The little forge that I mentioned earlier works off a venturi. I've always thought having a blower is the way to go but that little burner is sure doing the job for the forging that I do plus it is very quite if thats makes any difference.

I like my little venturi don't get me wrong.
D Fogg was one of the inspiration for my large welding forge. He built one in a 55 gal drum. Claims it is a more stable even heat.

Large hot mass vs small hot mass.

John Martin used one similar to my design only blown with a hair dryer, Johns forge convinced bigger was better.

Then too if you just wanna fire up for a couple hours in the evening or something the smaller forge is the one to have on hand.

I have about 15"high x 11" diameter(inside dimensions) in Betty the Behemoth. Don't know what th gas useage is but am just finising up the second 100# tank since last May. And thtat's with a Sweany Special burner(BOG)
She keeps the heat well enuff, I can turn off the gas and still forge for another 10 minutes.
