Forges

Rammed refractory is a clay like refractory. While similar to castable refractories, it is mixed thicker, like clay. It is placed where you want it and pounded (rammed) to cover the area firmly and completely. Then it is fired. Rammed refractories are usually very flux and heat resistant.

Another good forge floor is a 1" piece of Ins-board covered with a layer of bubble alumina. Some forges are built completely from Ins-board. A coat of ITC-100 will make it even more efficient.

Satanite.... the three burner in my shop belongs to a guy I am working with "Devil Forge" His kaowool was disintigrating. he relined it and used the satanite in it this time, seems to have made a difference, will see how well it holds up while I procrastinate getting mine assembled.....

I have a Majestic 3 burner. They are the same ones used on FIF. I had mine years before the show started. Not the best forge on the market but what did I know when I started (hint: NOTHING)? In any case, no forge is designed for the work piece to just sit there. You still have to pay attention and move the piece. I do like having 3 burners and I switch between 1, 2 and 3 burners frequently depending upon my need. The Majestic is holding up fine but will probably start looking into buying or building a new one in the near future.
