Forgetting Knife Info

what if ya have hundreds of them bought over 50 plus years? you gonna remember that important info at age 80?

^this isnt me but it matches some here
My personal preference is quality over quantity. If I own a knife there is a good reason to own it and it's in my mind. It doesn't just disappear in the pile. I think it's also a healthier way of collecting. But I understand different people collect in different ways.

[ devil's advocate] So liking it isn't good enough? [/devil's advocate]
I like a lot of knives that i don't own. If that was sufficient criteria for collecting then I would have no money. But I'm not saying get rid of any knife that you forgot about, just consider getting rid of it.

how long ya been collecting?

I've never understood hiding your knife collection away in all the boxes they came in.
(Hence my problem of not knowing everything about them. 🫤)

So what do people do?
Open the drawer and look at their collection of boxes?

🤔

I have to write down my chores for each day so I don’t forget what all needs done. I probably don’t really have to do that but it’s something I got in the habit of at an early age.

I keep a spreadsheet for my knives and although I do use it myself, it’s more for my wife so she won’t be left in the dark if I go first.

My spreadsheet would be sort of a random mix of this

-Magnacut insingo sebenza bought in 2025
-Kabar fixed blade my dad got from his dad in 1951 and handed down to me when I was 10
-Protech Godfather bought on Bladeforums in 2025. Never used because the tip looks too fragile
-Original Spyderco Catcherman bought in 1994. Lost in brothers tackle box until 2022 the jerk finally returned it

I've got all my emails and screenshots of most purchases so I can find the info if I need to. Most of my knives are things like an orange Paramilitary 2 that says CTS-XHP on the blade, so there's not much to remember. $117 IIRC.
A lot of us got good deals on our old collections.

I have a spreadsheet. Description of every knife and gun, serial number of applicable, where I bought it, date I bought it, original order number if applicable, date I sold it, person to whom I sold it and the forum or group it was sold in, sale price, unreported selling expenses (PayPal fees and shipping costs).
