hey guys....i have a friend on the "other" knife forum and he was looking for someone to forge a damascus spoon for him.....anybody know a maker i could contact?.....he is a chef and wants it as a tasting spoon.....thanks for any ideas.....ryan

Ryan, I had thoughts last year about doing some spoons. Came real close to buying a small swag block that did have a spoon indent. They wouldn't be to difficult to forge. I bet if I looked at some of my earlier forgings there could be a few spoons already made.

i didn't thnk it would be difficlult for a maker to forge out.....man how cool l would a raymond richard spoon set be??....or maybe one from bruce bump.....maybe his could fire bullets!.....ryan

Is that spoon loaded? I'm about caught up for the Oregon Show. I've got some pieces of iron buggy wheel that are quite good enough to be used for an S guards that could turn into spoons.

Thats funny Ryan, I had a call from a collector that wanted a knife and fork dinner set with a matched pair of flintlocks. May just as well make a matching spoon.:D

One question I would have, if it is to be used as a tasting spoon, woudn't there be issues with the steel imparting a taste, especially with acidic foods?
might I suggest a stainless bowl, or sterling silver with a damascus handle?

on a side note.....do you guys ever forge crazy stuff like that....a spoon....a big fork for your bbq.....i would think u get tired of making guns with engraved ivory and silver.....big bowies with cool hamons......do u make like hooks for your jacket in your house

oh yeah-and anyone wanna make a spoon-for real.....this chef really wants a custom tasting spoon.....ryan

sunshadow....thanks for your input.....what about stainless damscus...would that solve the problem?....i'm not sure-just a thought....ryan

Ryan, I felt like playing this morning. Fresh out of damascus but had the next best thing, old iron buggy wheel. :D This could also be my very last spoon.

Sunshadow, you are correct !! chemicals in food can indeed react with carbon steel and change flavor .Get something like Damasteel and forge it with a forming block .

Guess my brother and the other chef's that are prototyping my 1084 chef's knives better quit now before they poison us all!!!! :D

Stainless damascus might, if both metals were non-reactive, but if both metals were stainless, that would make the etch interesting to do. Maybe stainless and titanium? you could anodize the titanium all sorts of funky irridescent colors.
Having worked in a 4 star restaurant doing prep over a summer when I was in college many years ago, I would think a tasting spoon should be nonreactive in the bowl, and capable of being dishwashered, or at least 3 bay sinked with bleach for sterilization. My choices for metal would be stainless (something like a lab grade stainless) Sterling silver, titanium (if it is non-reactive, I don't know) and 14 or higher karat yellow gold. Iron is reactive and corrodes, aluminum is incredibly reactive, nickel is highly toxic, and for many people causes ulcerous reactions. I know Del does mokume, amybe he could do a silver/gold mokume spoon with some of his stabilized burl for a handle

just a thought,

who's del....i know i've seen his name here and his posts....but can't remember his last name.....ryan

Heres Del's site

http://www.ealyknives.com/

He makes some fine Mokume Gane with gold, silver, paladium not sure I spelled that last one correct but you get the point. Personally I think a silver spoon with a long inlay of mokume up the thin part and maybe some stone or ??? on the handle would be cool.

The cost of a precious metal mokume spoon.....ouch!

Tai Goo has made spoons before. I saw one, it was beautiful. It was made from Mokume Gane. Do not remember the composition but I was so awestruck did not even think to ask.
