forging a Persian style integral bowie

Since I have a handful of integral bowie fighters on order (I need to make sure I know what the hell I'm doing first), and I really needed to hammer on something tonight (beat out some frustrations), I decided to forge out a Persian-ish integral, as it's something I've wanted to do for a long time.

It's made from an "explosion pattern" mosaic billet that I made.

A lot of guys don't forge mosaic close to shape, because it's easy to shear the welds and distort the pattern.... but part of the appeal of it being forged (TO ME) is that the pattern will flow from ricasso, down to the edge, and squeeze down into the tip.

Since I only have about 48.75 other things to do between now and Reno (next week-end), I don't know if I'll be able to squeeze-in finishing this one... but it sure would be nice for variety in my offerings... we'll see :)

Here are the pics:

Just wish I could make it to Reno, not this year though. :grumpy:

Nick in the shop working away!

Anyone else think that this image is a Photoshop creation? Just kidding!

Seriously, a great looking blade! I am keen to see the damascus pattern.

Yup, that's impressive alright. Did you use a power hammer to start with? That's a teeny hammer for the BIG work... I like that swedge action goin' on.

Nice clean shop. No wonder you are meticulous. :D

The first thing that came to my mind, when I saw these pics was, "Oh, baby, this is going to be a killer bowie!" Nick, hurry up and finish it! I can't wait to see this one.

I, too, had to really look hard at that second pic and wondered if you didn't use the old power hammer on that.. the shape and length and lines all so clearly defined... just with a hand hammer???

If it doesn't have a home yet... maybe we should talk!!! LOL!!!

I'm sorry I'll miss y'all in Reno... too many other obligations... Have a great show! :D

With all the stuff that nick has to get done I bet he sleeps at the forge. That way, when he wakes up he can get started again real fast.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

Nick - good work here. Can you tell us what the length and width of the blade are?

I was thinking that it had to be fake too, the shop is WAY too clean. Can't be real! :p

Incredible work! Can't wait to see it ground and etched.

Thanks guys :)

Peter, I THINK it's real! :D

This one was all done with hand hammers. The initial work was done with a 3 lb. cross-pein. That one itty-bitty hammer is a ball-pein with the face ground square. I use it to refine the bevels once they are roughed in.

I realize now that the pics are a little bit off with my order here, the blade is further refined in the second pic than it is the last.... but you can probably see that! :)

BTW- Protein drinks, and coffee... :D

That gladiator still looks pristine buddy. Nice to see you are taking care of that surface and I really like the tennis ball on the font. Stuck yourself a couple of times before ya did that didn't you? Hope you have a great show in Reno bud and sell out quick so you can visit with the rest of the guys.

Very cool blade. Nick, I noticed that you are lefthanded. That explains everything. I was wondering why you're so creative but now I know. ;)
A lot of the great creative men over the past ages were lefthanded, just as you are.

Looks good nick i hope you have a good show in reno
get them J.S. blades done
