I was asked to make two welders chisels. One strait and on cross peined.
I was thinking of using 5160 because I have some on hand I could forge to the proper size (about 5/8 round).
Does anyone have a better idea? mabey something that is already round that I can order like 12" of. It would be so much easier if I could get it in 5/8 round.
To make it clear I am talking about the small hammer like chisels that are used to clean slag off welds.
A customer of mine wants me to make these to mach a knife he purchased.
Thanks much

You are describing a "chipping hammer" .5160 would work ,or one of the S series like S-5.

I made one out of a mystery spring maybe 1" stock or a bit heavier:eek: it took some pounding to make it but the end result was nice.I ended up making it flat in the middle and tapered the ends to a point/chisel.I had good results with the temper straw on the ends to a blue middle. It didnt mushroom like the store bought ones.

What Mete said... S-5 or S-7 would be a much better choice. Most pry bars you find or jack hammer bits would fit the bill.

Hey I got some punches from an air powered punch gun if you want one. These are like small jack hammers and used to punch tubes from an exchanger tube sheet. They snap off once in a while after a few hundred tubes, I suspect they are something like S-7
