Forging Fun with Dan Farr

Thanks for bringing the blades to the coffee break last night Roger, you are hooked now.

They are an eyeopener, and I am not surprised that it was such a great time for you working with Dan.

I would keep working on the larger blades though, your technique could do with some more practice.

Very impressive. Well worth the download time for the pics and the sweat you guys went through to get to the finish. They look really great to me.

Thanks for the comments, guys!:)

Doug - I think I will probably go with some of Dan's signature English walnut for both knives.

Wulf - Dan speaks very highly of your skills. Now that you have built yourself a forge, there will be no stopping you!

Peter - technically, I believe there must be somebody waiting in order to have a wait list - LOL! :) I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon.

My thanks again to Dan for a terrific experience.

Great photos Roger! Thanks for taking the time to take and post them. I know at least one other maker (who thinks rather highly of himself ;)) who got his start with Dan. Dan's a regular knife maker factory ;).

Roger ... I am going to send you a few drawings :D

Great write up and pictures , your a lucky guy!

Most excellent way to spend a three day weekend! And from the looks of it, you're a wee bit better with the tools than you admit!

Thanks for sharing such an experience. And it's so great to hear another maker out there treating us to more than just their finished product - kudos to Dan Farr for taking his time to bring the art out of the shed, so to speak! Nick did a much forshortened version with me one weekend, and I walked away with a completely different way of looking at what for me is a hobby - knife collecting! And getting to actually know the artists who do it!

Wow - what a great gesture and looks like it was a blast. You did a great job on those.

Roger is kind enough to keep letting me see great knives he collects and even to buy some he has enjoyed and continues to enjoy when he visits. Great!! now he'll be selling me his own knives. Better apply for your CKG membership Roger.

Congrats, fine work for a beginner. Hope you're able to get the handles on those soon so we can see how they turn out. Thanks for the post.

Roger,

Your text and pictures were a work of art. I found myself smiling several times.

What a wonderful experience and an excellent representation of it for us.

Thanks for the gift!

Gus

P.S. that knife looks like it is off and running. I wish the first one I hammered out looked one third that good.

Got to handle that very knife last night, a very nice piece and the character marks are great, can't wait to see it once it is completed, Great Job Roger!

Really enjoyed reading this thread. Thanks, Roger, for a pleasant moment in a tiring day.

You're a lucky man to get such an opportunity. I wonder if any bladesmiths did much better on their first day. Why not keep it up?:)
