I am in need of some more tongs. I really need one to hold 1" round and 1/2" flat stock. I am planing on forging them out as it will be fun and cheaper. Any one have any tips or "how to" info about this. I found a youtube video on it but but i am wanting more. Thanks

Sign up over at iforgeiron.com and have a look thru their "blueprints" section. I'm sure youll find instructions to make more styles of tongs than you have time to make. If you have questions or problems making anything related to blacksmithing there are a lot of talented blacksmiths over there that are more than willing to help. There are even a few bladesmiths that hang out there as well.

I concur with Sam's suggestion for that type of tong. Very useful in forging blades. I will add that if you forge one jaw as a 1/2" wide hook (like the ones shown) and the other as a 1" wide hook ( center the small hook over the wide hook) it really gets a good grip on a blade. I use a 1/4" wide "U" gap in the hooks. I call them "U" box tongs.
Tong rings are a good thing to make ,too, if you are going to do a lot of forging.

With my experience of making homemade tongs it is by far cheaper and one heck of a lot faster to buy them already made. Having tongs that work right for you is very important. The ones that work right for me are ones that I have purchased. That link that Sam supplied has some fine looking tongs and the prices are very good.
