I am new to forging but I am hooked. I have forged a few blades out at other peoples shops but now have a running forge at my shop.:D When last visiting Fred Rowe he passed on his old NC Forge to me, thanks again Fred. Anyhow yesterday I pounded out a 5" hunter and took a few pics as I went. I am learning something new with each one I forge. I have had a couple good teachers to point me in the right direction, and this forum has been great, thanks to all. I made a couple of tools so far to help me including a chop fuller inspired by Raymond Richard's Godzilla. Anyhow enough rambling here are a couple pics.

I liked your forge. I also noticed you have it in your garage with the door 1/3rd open. I'm guessing you do that because your neighbor friendly. Does this impose a health risk? If its safe, I would like to do the same, but i'm too concerned with some sort of emmision. Can anyone shed some info on this?

Good to see your progress, Carl.

You are turning out some nice blades.

Regards, Fred

Very nice. I need to make myself one of those fuller tools. Also, very generous of Fred to give you that forge. Looks pretty sweet. Did you draw that tang out with the hammer and anvil? I have trouble drawing out a good tang on barstock that is thinner than 1/4". It just wants to fold over on me.

What an excellent point!!

Yes. Without a doubt that is a health risk. Even if you used a ceiling mounted carbon monoxide sensor you might not prevent problems.

It's well known that cumulative exposure to CO can cause very serious neurological, psychiatric, cardiac and other problems without noticeable blood level increases (COHb).

The slight venting from an open garage door will likely prevent higher COHb levels that cause the classic shortness of breath, headache, confusion and the most common symptoms -nausea and dizziness. The low level chronic exposure is the problem that is still being studied but clearly of concern.

I use my forge outdoors only since I don't have a venting system in my garage.

CO exposure is an area of particular interest to me even now though I have retired from my practice of emergency medicine.

Thanks for the kind words and concern. I have a CO2 sensor mounted near the forge and have a fan in the garage door pulling out. Also I usually have the door opened more but closed it down some to get a picture of the forge running. Mike I have been drawing the tangs out with the hammer and anvil. I have been doing three fullers with the chop fuller and cutting it off then drawing it out.
