Has anybody made a die for their forging press that holds their stamp? Just a thought....

I did it, the forging press as too much power and is much too fast.

I ended up making a small press using a 6 ton bottle jack. This based off one Kevin Cashin posted here.
Works good, but I still like using a hammer better.

I prefer using a hammer. I used to stamp it hot but now put my mark into annealed steel. Good punches are expensive and repeated use on hot steel must have some effect on the temper.

I used a hammer and made a holder for an arbor press. This way it is held perfectly straight and get a more consistent mark.

I agree 100% with DH III, I tried a powered press for this and it was not controllable enough. I even cracked a knife using it. Bottle jack has much more control.

Okay... Just thought I'd check. :-) My press sits on I-beams and I have space to put a bottle jack.. just need to make the holder for the stamp. I'm getting a new stamp made that will be a bit wider than what I currently have and I foresee frustration if I continue with my current method.. free hammering hot or cold/annealed.

You know what I think.

Scott,

I'm not sure what you are using now but Henry Evers makes a stamp holder that has worked well for me (I hammer by hand). You will need to use one of their stamps made for it rather than their typical stamp however.

Gary.. What if you want to hand hold their stamps for hot stamping? I like the idea of using a press or arbor for doing this.. but I want the flexibility of doing it manually as well. I suppose I could get different stamps made.... but they are kinda pricey.

The stamp is removable so it came be used manually. It is simply a little wider than their normal stamp and has a pin which aligns with a slot in the fixture. The fixture has a screw on either side to clamp the blade in place but the stamp itself slides freely up & down and is removable. http://www.henryaevers.com/_borders/Front_Page_1.jpg

I don't ever use my stamps (I actually have two in Wheeler and 1 Js) but I built a giz-wiz to hold mine back when I did use them. It's just a flat piece of steel about 4" wide X 16" long, and it has another piece of steel bolted to it making it a short legged T

The vertical piece has a channel milled out for the stamp to slide in, and also a channel milled between it and the long piece for the blades to pass through. Super simple, fast to make, and works great.

However, if I was using a stamp on every knife, there's no doubt I'd be building a bottle jack press. That one of Karl's is perfect for the task, IMHO. :)

That picture must be four or fives years old. A long time ago I switched to one of those stubby 50 ton jacks. What's nice is that I can just squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze it a little bit - check it out - set the stamp right back in place and give it a little more if necessary.

That's similar to mine, Karl. Yours is beefier though and a 20 ton jack is better.
