Well, I'm making the move to the forge (cause you can do so many cool things), but I need some help.

I'm just in the process of building a gas forge. I've got a burner that I'm gonna use ready. I've been looking at the plans from Don Fogg and others and most say to go with a cylinder (more even heating). My question...can you use Fire Bricks and appropriate morter inside a steel tube, or will it crack and crumble when heated? Is there any reason that I couldn't just make a nice simple square forge with fire brick? (Like the Whisper series ones)? I'm also wondering about a "reducing atmosphere"? Will this large single propane burner produce the right conditions to forge and weld? (The burner has heated open (0.5 gallon) pots of lead to 1000F in open air).

Also, what are automotive springs made from (I think it's 5160), I also have a rear coil spring from a 1986 Yamaha 1200...anyone know if this will make a good knife?

Oh ya, what is cable damascus exactly? It's not made from winch cable is it??

Thanks for any help.

Best regards,

Darren

Cable damascus is made from wire cable. My friend welded the ends, then heated it to a red heat and twisted it tight before forge welding. You might also try motorcycle chains. It has an interesting look.
