Jim, I make the slot by drilling several 1/4 to 5/16" holes in a row and then cleaning out the web with a carbide burr. This is done on my Ridged drill press I got at Home Depot. I bought a precision cross vice at Harbor Freight that makes things easier.

Thanks for the fast response Ray. I have about 15 feet of 1 inch square 1087 so will do your tutorial with a few pieces. Thanks again.

Jim, I just happened to remember on that head I was working on I did that one different. On that one I just drilled two 5/8" holes and cleaned it out with a burr. I do it that way when I don't want to drift an eye. The way I mentioned earlier is the way I do the slot if I'm going to drift the eye. If I'm going to use a drift I try and make the slot approx. 1 1/4" long by 5/16" wide.

great stuff!! thanks all!
any recommendations for making a drift? i was thinking rough forge it and grind it to shape.
peace
