• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

I put a knife in the oven, and then forgot about it. It has probably been tempering at 400 for maybe 3 hours. Is that a problem? I dont think it will affect the knife, but I am not sure. I had already done one cycle for an hour, and now have this one for 3. Hope its ok.

No problem at all ,in fact we usually recommend at least a 2 hour temper .Even if you left it in overnight it won't hurt.

thanks, thats what I wanted to hear. Kinda thought that, but wanted approval from an expert.

Matt

It should be fine, but test anyway. It's a good practice to test every blade you do. At least the basics, brass rod and cutting ability will tell you a lot. As long as your oven doesn't spike the temp you'll be fine.

Hi Matt, I did'nt think it would hurt but it's good to know from a man who knows steel.

I don't mean to change the subject but I see you both are from the great white north also. Feel free to contact me as nobody up here understands my sickness when you can buy a knife for $5.97 at wally-world

You can buy a "Knife" at wal-mart. The little pocket knife I have from there can cut only a small little pile of cardboard before getting dulled like crazy. The knife I made myself lasts almost all day cutting boxes. (I'm stocker at a store)

Will, thanks for the info. I usually test my knife, but I wanted to keep from wasting any time. I have a oven thermometer in the oven and it holds a nice even 400.

I must confess, I once bought many a blade from wal mart. I make whatever I need now, and havent bought a store blade for many years. I occasionally am tempted by some of the knives I have seen here on bladeforums, but now I am a knifemaker, and have been shoveling all my extra cash into buying supplies, and cant afford to buy a knife. If I wasnt making them, I wouldnt be able to afford buying one of my own knives. ;)

I know what you mean, Matt. I have quite a collection of factory stuff N.I.B. [not walmart stuff either]. Now would rather make than buy. What I'm gettin' at is I'de like to see a N.Y. makers get-together or hammer-in. No makers to hang with and compare stuff and tell stories up here. Everyone thinks I'm nuts for what I've invested since wally is just up the road.
