I was using the angle grinder tonight, cutting out a couple blanks for Mark's sample wood, and I forgot to put on the leather apron...got in a hurry? lack of habit? to much newbie in me still? Who knows why...

Anyway, grinding away - once in a while I'd feel the hot air shooting out of the grinder on my shirt...still no light bulb concerning my apron...

A few minutes later, the air [I thought it was the air] felt especially hot, too hot. I looked down and my shirt was on fire from excessive hot metal....:o

Stomped it out, and threw on the apron...wow I feel stupid. HAHA. To top it all of, my wife was there to witness it, and thought it was the funniest thing.

Live and learn I guess, this was my favorite black shirt.:D

Beautiful... Still never happens to me... Although I HAVE gotten the spray of sparks directly in my hair... I have long hair. Later I managed to pull fragments that had been burnt in half.

i guess we all have our kodak moment :)

safely is importance , i heard if you grind too hard and too long without cooling the steel it going to be bad for the edge i wonder

keep it safe

I heard stuff like that too, when I'm belt grinding I dip every few seconds, and when I'm angle grinding I spray it down with a spray bottle between runs.

You know I haven't set anything on fire yet:confused: Got some nice cuts, ground down the tip of a finger, and dislocated my little finger, but no fires yet. I mustn't be trying hard enough, but there is always next year when I give forging a try:eek:

You haven't lived until that angle grinder slips off the edge of a workpiece and the stone goes through your shirt....ask me how I know :) Of course, because I'm a "go big or go home" sort of guy I did it with a 4HP, 6000RPM, 7" grinder with a 5" cup stone on it....while demonstrating in public.

Glad you're OK and let this serve as your first warning not to wear anything you like into the shop ;)

You know, in this day and age, there just aren't that many people who can say they have set themselves on fire. That is really kind of an accomplishment.

Did my pant leg one time cutting rebar on the ground with a gas powered cutoff saw. I'm told that I have never danced better in my life:o

You might consider not only spraying your workpiece, but
yourself as well!;)

Bill

And yes, I've got one of those shirts, too.

This whole thread is chock full of chuckles. Burl Source said it best..."I am getting the impression that lighting yourself on fire and stabbing yourself are just a normal part of knife making."

Yup, I'll have to concur. I sell plasma to buy extra shop tools, wood etc...and I keep cutting my right thumb, that's the thumb the plasma place uses to confirm my identity. Right now, I don't think my sliced/roughed up thumb would confirm anything, haha.
