Forgotten & Lost Classics: Legendary Benchmade Boguszewski Spike 650

...It is a classic that was copied by a lot of Asian low rent factories, which is why it was discontinued....
i think you nailed a probable cause of its demise.
it being a guardless folder is a cause of concern amongst other things for the
ordinary knife user.
being a slim stabby thingy by design
lends it self as something of an "thrusty" companion.
but that is a nonmatter to the fearsome 90's warriors of the day :)
and yes, there were plenty of flimsy clones about.
and i guess there still are ;-)
which the above btw, lacks the real
quality of a case knives slimlock model
imho, the spike has an ageless design appeal.
and it would be entirely nice to see a new benchmade spike some fine day :)

I would rather well heat treated 154CM and ATS34 than poorly heat treated M390, S35VN, or any other steel. There's a lot more to a steel than just the name.

Agree. "poorly heat treated" steels are basically defects, using them it's like eating raw uncooked pasta... Cheap, canned Walmart pasta tastes better than uncooked raw best brand pasta any time. So I do agree with you in that sense ATS 34 and 154CM can be better steels. Protech uses 154CM a lot and I have not had any issues with that steel, and I'd rather have 154CM than a thin slicer blade with soft s35vn that could bend under pressure. There's always more smaller details and facts to consider.

I just saw this awesome thread. Very cool video and even cooler to see interest in this old classic!

Got to consider when this model came out. Don't hate on the steel too much--these were pretty special in 93' when they were in their heyday. My custom is probably 440C--which is also awesome! Pretty much the knife that got me interested in high-end knives. My older brother had a cool, art-dealer friend who carried a Benchmade auto and he told me about the Spike. Some guys buy classic cars when they grow up--some guys buy knives that almost nobody else remembers lol

Here's Boguszewski Spike #1, the Spike auto, and a Boguszewski lockback. The man made knives to a level that I have not seen since--and without much technology in the early days. 0-8.jpeg

Wow thank you! Those are awesome looking Boguszewski customs. He had no problem selling his knives, even though his work was pricier than others. Some similarities in designs (from the pics I saw online Boguszewski custom knives) like Mel Pardue, however those are very unique pieces.

During the 1990s and early 2000s the best steels were the 440s, ats 34 and 154cm. They are fine steels, sharpen easily hold well, however the new "supersteels" generation took over and replaced.

I'd really love to see Benchmade doing a Spyderco like Sprint run on some of these early 1990s popular and unique models like Bogu Spike and others. Maybe with newer steels like M4, 3v, m390 or similar.

Thank you!

RIP Phil Boguszewski!

Thanks for reintroducing a classic! I have one. It is one of my all time favorite knives. I carry and use it frequently. There is something special about these vintage models.

Your idea for a modern run of this design is fantastic! This design with a titanium frame lock, ceramic bearings and a modern steel would be awesome!

Here is mine

Just saw this post as I'm going through my collection. Here's my Spike, but it's a MINI.

Reviving an old thread. First, to say that your mini Spike is awesome.

Second is in hopes that a few people who aren't already familiar with the awesomeness of Bogie's Spike stumble upon this thread and become curious enough to find one for themselves.

I had the 1000S, partially serrated auto.

Can confirm the slippery handle. Can also attest to a very stout spring. In fact, after my nephew (who was familiar with switchblades, and even owned a couple) opened mine - and seeing it launch out of his hand onto the sidewalk scuffing up the handle, I wrapped it with some grip tape.

Pointy tip still intact and spring as strong as ever, my youngest son now owns it.

These were all over Benchmade magazine ads in the early to mid 90s. I thought they were well made but was not too interested in getting one. Once Benchmade came out with the AFCK and Emerson collaboration around '95, this design kind of fell by the wayside.

norcalAF - the Benchmade Spike predates those Cold Steel models by a few years.

I picked up a mini spike when they came out. I liked the design. Mine came with a convex recurve near the tip. I sent an email to Benchmade about it, and Les made a lame excuse claiming that when grinding the blade the laws of physics just take over, which certainly dropped my opinion of him.

My son started carrying it and eventually lost it.

Now that's a legendary Benchmade classic.

I bought one in 95 or 96 and the first time I fired it it landed on the ground. That knife had a hekuva kick
