I've been thinking about trying out a FT Iroquios hawk. Been looking for a hawk thats light, thin, sharp, and affordable. Anyone have any experience with them compared to similar companys like H&B and such?
I've bought 5 hawks from Dana Turner. I am totally satisfied with the product and the service. I also bought three hawks from H&B Forge and cannot complain about the product or the service. I received a BM Rainier axe as a gift which I also like. Frankly, if I buy anymore hawks, I'll buy them from Fort Turner. Best bang for the buck. Does that help?
The H&B hawks are very solid, but too heavy for my liking. Their heads are much thicker and heavier than the FT ones.
I also prefer the slightly more slender FT handles.
Thanks for the comments guys, I also own a H&B (shawnee with arrow spike) and a Bear Mountain Frontiersmen as well as some CS hawks which are fun to play with and try to customize but other than that kinda poor in my opinion. I like the H&B and BM hawks alot but have been looking for a cheaper, thinner, lighter hawk without a hammerpole or spike mostly for throwing but also for some light camp work.
I have been considering a Vtac, I think a FT is ognna be my next hawk tho since it's more affordable and I prefer the wood handle/historic look to the modern tactical. The Vtac does seem like a tremendous hawk. How hard is it to bring thr edge of a FT up to shaving sharpness? What kind of stones do you guys use?
I have a iriquois hawk Dana made for me special, with hammer pole... cost a bit more but it was worth it... easy to sharpen, I use my sharpmaker, my only gripe is the handle is a bit small (in diameter), but nothing some tape or rawhide couldn't fix... great product for the price...
BrodyR ?
Why are you looking for a thin hawk anyway ? Is it for lightness or look .
The last hawk I picked up from an undisclosed source looks like it was put together by a child playing with matches and his daddies forge . The company politely took it back with no questions asked .
Everything tells me the Fort Turner will be a great one . I won,t be picking up any hawks unless it is a known source or I see it in person first .
I have enough hawks for now even excluding the dud I picked up .
I am seriously looking at the Fort Turner throwing knife . Aside from its rugged good looks I emailed them and they were straightforward with me .
I've got a camp Tomahawk and a camp hawk from Fort Turner, and both are excellent for the price. I got the Camp hawk to fill in the gap while waiting for a bigger, better, faster, more tactical hawk, but now it's my favorite hawk hands down!
the price is right, the craftsmanship very decent. Dana was a helluva nice guy to talk to. I was in a hurry, and trying to get the camp Hawk for my son for his B-day. He called personally to tell me that he wouldn't be able to get near the order for at least three weeks. So, I figured the way things go, I'd get the hawks in six to eight weeks.
Instead I got 'em in two!
Only thing on them that I'm not real fond of is the narrow handles. I wound up wrapping the end of mine with some leather lacing in order to make it more comfortable and grippy.
Don't throw mine often enough to offer a qualified opinion. Sure did get a couple campfires goin' in a hurry this past summer though.
Thanks for all the input guys, im pretty set on an iroquois hawk now. My buddies been looking for a throwing knife and may try theirs out, i'll be sure to post pictures when I get them.
