Forum generosity / jackmaster vs china copy

I've tried to sharpen it, but I'm having trouble getting it any sharper but maybe it's just a bit harder and I just need to spend more time on it.

I am hunting for more Imperial or Old Timer Barlows. I Love them and the take a razor edge.

I've decided to give up trying to sharpen the copy, because while it seems fairly sharp it cuts very roughly for some reason.
The scales are also much fatter and for being such a similar knife it just doesn't feel right being fatter. If it was a completely different Barlow it probably wouldn't be a problem though.

The original has some terrific old-school carbon steel (1075 I believe) whereas the new, foreign copy has a cheap stainless - that is why the difference in edges. I sure like the original! OH

Can't beat an old Barlow. Especially for free. Good on you R8SHELL.

I know, and it's certainly apparent.
I wonder if they still make these no name China copys ( my grandma told me its well over 20yrs old )
I wouldn't expect it to take an edge like the carbon steel imperial does, because that would be asking it to be something it's not. I'd settle for rough rider type performance though.

I couldn't bring myself to completely give up on it, and I was able to get a much better edge on it.
It's still not a steel I'd choose for edc.
