Since 1999, I have been posting as chrisaloia. I am now posting as psy-ops.

Last week, I finished my 4 year college degree and I am going to gradschool next year.

My wife has been begging me to change my fourm name. She thinks some of my posts could possibly cause hesitation in getting an academic position. I hate caving in to pc-ness but one has to chose their battles.

She might be right. Who would want to hire some wacko that collects knives ?

One valid survival technique can be keeping a low profile and that's all you're doing.

Is your prospective employer basing his hiring decision on your forum name or is he basing his hiring decision on oyur skills, training, and education?

Don't change your pic then, cause that is the first thing I notice when I see you on a thread. What did you go to school for if you don't mind me asking?

I'm still going for Range and Wildlife management and then hopefully 7 months of game warden academy here in Texas.

"Since 1999, I have been posting as chrisaloia. I am now posting as psy-ops. "

psy-ops is a more interesting name anyway, good luck.

Thanks to everyone.

I am doing psych research not counselling. I will get paid to research why the hell people do what they do.

Bushman, when a professor gets hired at a university they basically crawl up your butt.

Explains some of your responses and threads now knowing your education background! Your new name sounds more tactical now! I'm curiouis how posting can cause academic hesitation when applying for an academic position? Anyway good luck with your endeavors.

Chris,
I am relieved to hear it is you. I thought someone had "stolen" your avatar! Kind of like a body-snatcher, but not really...

Raindog, that is funny!

Diamonddog, many of my posts especially from the early years are very pro-weapon and run for the hills type survival. Over the years, I have learned when I start talking about self defense and survival stuff to my academic friends it makes some uncomfortable. If I was being scrutinized during hirings and someone googled my name and read a bunch of my early posts it could raise some questions. These jobs are often very competitive and if they found someone let's say more "academic" I could get over looked. That is not to say this would ever happen, I am just saying it could. They don't call it the "ivory tower" for nothing. One of my friends had some nasty stuff of this sort happen where his co-workers blackballed him and he was forced to quit. It was a huge stink and he ended up dying of a heart attack a year or so later. I believe it was a broken heart that killed him.

There is also the possibility of defending yourself and prosecution finding your name on a self defense forum and using your posts against you. I have to say mine could easily be used against me.

Maybe I am just paranoid.

Thanks to all

Chris

So how does that work, will it change the name on your past posts as well? Mac

Good question, I was wondering the same thing. It should since the posts number always changes each time you post. So, psy-ops, did it change your old posts?

To be fair, when I interviewing for a sales position at knife store- the horde was a very important discussion and resumee topic- especially considering the store markets several brands I'm familiar with.

Psy-Ops- If you are trying to protect your indentity, I recommend not admitting to the previous profile name in your posts- in your first post you straight away tell them who you are, were, and that you changed your name because you said some stuff that you want to hide. If your that concerened- well- it doesn't make sense to line the two now does it.

It's easy enough to delete it. I think my post is the only one that has the quote in it, so I will delete it now.

How about this:

Dear Mods,

Please delete this thread as I am incriminating myself and all previous veiwpoints I espoused aren't worth me forsaking a career as a professor in the ranks of teaching a singular, populist viewpoint. (This is sarcastic btw)

I have worked in the food business sure, but I have run cafeterias and food programs within the confines of academia. I think you'll find the bigger problem you'll be facing is standing your ground. When you get around all the PHD's, MA's and EDD's you'll be challenged intellectually everyday, morally weekly and spiritually always. The easiest way around all this?

Sort out what you believe in then argue your points, stand pat and find common ground.

I remember one day a History professer came down to the kitchen and saw me cutting open boxes with a Mili-he was flabbergasted, "Why do you need such a knife to open boxes?" My reply was to point to the wall on which a 12" Carbon Chef knife magnetically stuck to the wall. "Would you rather I use that?" He smiled.

Chef, great response.

mp510,

if you think about it, anyone doing a general search under my real name would not get my psuedonym. They would have a helluva time finding this thread. I just don't want a direct link.

If someone is willing to go to that length, they can find other stuff that is more public in a purely intellectual sense.
I am not in the witness protection program.
