The forward lanyard for big knives is a must for me, both safety and comfort. Way more likely to have that 10-12" of slicing steel coming whipping down to your feet or legs if it comes loose from you hand where as with the forward lanyard it has a limit of forward rotation preventing that handle from "breaking" your thumb in a grip.
As much as I hate combatives with knives, when running trainers that is where you generally twist the knife out of your opponents grip; same as with a forward weighted blade swinging on a folllow through.
Forward lanyards also seem to create less strain on a hammer type grip when being used for a long period of time ie. clearing trails and the like. If I am using mine for more than a couple of cuts I quickly tie a lanyard on.
