Fossil walrus oosik (walrus penis bone) sought after for knife handles – usually hidden tang style. Is an exotic conversation piece material that holds up well. Does not warp break chip easily . I considered offering oosiks rough as is, but seem to have better luck cutting to knife lengths, polishing doing any restoration stabilizing that needs to be done. These range from $50 to $65.
Ossik bone handle #1 is 5 ½ inches long x a uniform 1 inch across. Could be turned in a lathe if desired. Weighs 6.5 ounces. Very solid and stable, takes a good polish, good colors all natural no restoration. R oos4-1 711 is the order code if inquiring. $65
Ossik bone handle #2 just over 4 inches long x 1 inch at one end, and ¾ at the narrow end . Is the other half of #1 solid good color just smaller less weight. 4 ounces. R oos 4-2 711 is the order code if inquiring $50
Ossik bone handle #3 is 5 ½ inches long x 1 ¼ at one end and 1 inch at the narrow end. Weighs 6 ounces. Core is solid but outside needed restoration and stabilizing. Good news is nice dark colors. Used blue filler here and there to duplicate what sometimes happens in nature with blue vivianite in the fossilization process. Outside is no hard, takes nice polish. Ossik bone handle #4 is 6 1/4 long x 1 inch across at the big end and tapers to ¾ at the narrow end. Weighs 4.4 ounces. This is the other half of #3. Same situation had to stabilized the soft outside now solid takes a polish good colors use blue filler, has sold core as with #3 it could be sanded down to natural solid. Left the natural porous end on as it is distinctive to the end of the oosik but since it is over 6 inches could be trimmed down if desired. R oos 4-4 711 is the order code if inquiring. $50
