Yeah, a lot of folks are nervous about using ivory. Obviously, I'm not one of them. So long as you KNOW the ivory is fossil (either by appearance or documentation), I don't worry much. It was your descriptions that made me nervous... talking about "pith" and stickiness. I've worked a fair amount of fossil ivory and never had anything that was "sticky" or pith-like. Heck, I even made a handle entirely from the tapioca part. Two actually. All the ivory I've worked the tapioca is as hard and solid as the outer shell. So when you started talking about pith and how much you had to remove to make it usable, you set off some alarms with me... and probably others as well.

But Bladeforums might not be friendly territory to talk about Ivory at all. I am not basing that solely off this thread or anyone in it. I don't doubt for a second the inclination and energy of people who think they can protect something by reporting someone else. The last situation I need to be in, is on the defensive for something I didn't do.
