This is 2 degree's of separation away from anything knife related, but if your planning on buying a camera for takin photo's of knives, it is.

I just bought a sony w200 from fotoconnection.com, wich they state as being 275$ on their website.

What they are actually selling is sony's chinese release/manifactured version, wich comes with a chinese manual and a warranty that is only valid in china. Why do they sell it? so that they can get you to buy the u.s.a. model for 330$. They don't mention that it's the chinese model until they call you to "verify your order", at wich point they will repeat their "special kit's" 3 or 4 times regardless of how adamant you are about no wanting or needing them.

I was at work when they called me, so I only put up resistence to the accesories packages, all of wich I have already since I'm switching from a w100. I just went along with the u.s. model bit because I was at work and didn't have time to argue or just cancel the order. and I wanted it before christmas.

lol, edit to add: their "special package kit" wich includes the "longlife battery" is actually just the u.s. box you'd buy off the shelf. there is nothing special about it.

so, I ended up paying 330$ instead of 275$ that they listed. b&h photo (wich is known for reltively high prices, but good service and a lot of variety) has it at 309$ and I'm positive they are selling the u.s. model.

I don't really care, they gave good service otherwise, but just be aware that if you try to buy a camera from them they may try to do this to you. If you buy from them and they mention that you'd have to upgrade to the u.s. model, just cancel the order - you will be able to get it elsewhere for cheaper.

This is what's refered to as a "grey market" item (they come from all over not just China.) This is a very common practice in the photo industry.

What!? B&H is know for having some of the lowest prices on photo gear around. Which by the way they sell grey market items also...they are very up front about it though and will tell you what country the item is from. I saved close to $100 on a flash (Nikon SB-800 from Germany) that way thru B&H.

Take it from a professional Photographer, photographic consultant, and photo instuctor at a college. There is nothing wrong with buying or selling grey market items. The fact that that company was not up-front about that is not cool IMO; but as with anything shop around and remember if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Cheers

The photography retail industry is pretty strange. B&H and Adorama are about the lowest you can find for genuine prices. There are many retailers that advertise lower prices but they're not genuine prices; they just advertise those prices to get you to call and then they play bait-and-switch on you. That's illegal, of course, but for whatever reason they don't get prosecuted. That's been going on since long before the net, with ads in the photography magazines, and now they do it on the net too.

Another good & reputable photo company to deal with that competes with B&H on pricing alot is Calumet Photographic.

also funny, everything about this camera is still made in china, wether its the american release or not.

now that I really look at it, b&h actually does have one of the lower prices for the w200, wich is crappy because I would have much rather done bussiness with them.
