Found a buck knife in yard sale

Well I suppose i did pretty well considering I got it for free then. So just for my own info what would a package like this be worth? and is it consensus that it is circa 1970s

I found the following in the archives from Joe, but I can't find the 317N1 in either the catalog or the price list for that year. It also says "partially" serrated.

In Buck's 1989 catalog they introduced 4 models with partially serrated blades. The 105N1, 426N1, 301N1, and 317N1. The following year the 317 had been dropped and the 110N1 was added. They were all gone the next year.

Ok,

317 - Four standards made by Camillus models: Three you may find- Tang stamped Made In USA, Tang stamped Buck,317, USA and the discussed serrated blade. The fourth is a Made In USA with scale rivets. These are the rare first of the first production run.
Not any were made by Buck, but some were modified. Camillus made them from 72 to 89.

During 88/89ish, a serrated era was attempted, you can find serrated 317s, 301s, 315s and even 311 Trappers (why I have no idea, they were not suited for such). Serrations were re-thought and dropped over the following year. Hung on in the 301 until blade supply ran out.

The 317 was special ordered by SMKWs with Aurum etched blades in the 'American Series', the American Logger with Paul Bunyon, American Farmer with tractor and American Railroader with a locomotive. All made by Camillus then on to etcher. Secondary blade pad printed, likely by Buck.

Buck also pad printed at least one batch for SMKWs, also farm oriented scene.

The 317 remains higher in value than 'I' think it is worth, why I only guess that it is because they look good strapped on the belt when wearing Harley black leathers.
You win the lottery and you can talk to me about selling one of the rare ones$$$......and I don't have them all. A couple more threads about them and I never will....ha

This is odd-ball 317 with Buck,317,USA blade stamped with scale rivets. I think the blade was replaced under Buck Warranty. Broken most likely or worn out. Look how worn the secondary blade is.

SMKWs special order. Camillus made, Aurum etched main blade, pad printed secondary.

Pad printed by Buck for SMKWs. Buck did all there own pad printing. (NMK, my photo) (Not My Knife)

If one of these guys writes you a private message, don't answer it....only talk to me. I am the only one you can trust concerning these 300 series knives......especially with these guys...... : - )

First thing, if you are the one that put the swirl marks on the bolsters, don't polish with whatever you used. Use only Flitz or Mothers Alum wheel polish.....

You have a collectable with decent value.....lets just say if I walked into a garage sale and saw that I might wet my pants.....

If you have any more questions send ME a private message

You sorta get the feeling that this is an interesting knife, don't you?

New category: The "wet your pants" knife.

Gotta love this forum!

BG,

The older I have gotten, the more I understand 'How' that could happen.....WYP

If you decide not to keep it, you might get the wet pants feeling if you put iton the big auction site. Just a thought for the day. No telling how much it would fetch. But if it were mine it would stay mine--kinda of a nest egg type knife.

No matter what, I wouldn't try e-Bay in this economy.

Some things DO go far too cheap. I haven't sold anything there for years, but I've gotten some bargains buying.

Maybe in a few years, but not now.

There are 4 of the hard 317s on there now... (The big auction site...) I will bid on one of them, for sure... I think they will go for some BIG $$$... There are alot of us here on the forum that have been looking for them... This is the first time I have seen them for sale...

ITE ... :(

So me getting this for free is an even better deal then. That really makes my day. But just for my own info could someone put an market value on it. And is it definitely an 88-89 year

This could be something like some of the items that people bring in to the pawn shop on the TV series, Pawn Stars. A lot of times there just aren't enough of the particular item around for them to know what a fair price is.

I have two, one with box, sheath and paper work and the other with out. The one with box, sheath, etc. I paid right at $75 for, the other one around $50. They don't have the serrated blade though, so who knows.

It could go for $50 one day and the next day it could go $250 or more... It's just like gold... Up and down... Best way to find out is to put it on ebay and let it ride... You have nothing in to it... I'm always looking for 317s like everyone else... They are always on the bay... But not like yours... It's a hard one to find for sure... I wish I new how many they made... ITE ... :D

I think gold is more driven up and down by economics. Auctions can go out of sight one day because two guys get into a bidding war over something (been there, done that :o)and run the price way up and out of the realm of reality. The next one may end at a bad day of the week or a bad time of day and go for way less than it should.

I hear you Dave... I just threw that out there about the gold... I was just trying to say that the price of knives go up and down... Some knives that I bought for $150... I can buy the same ones now for $50 or less or a little more and that sucks... But that's the way it is... That's why, I'm always looking for good deals...

Dave you did well on price. Most of the time those guys go for much more than what you paid.

I really like this pattern. I bought one in 1978 and loaned to a buddy and he lost it. I remember that it cost $25 then. I need one for my EDC box. Also, wish Buck would bring it back along with the 317. I know Camillus produced both those models but it would be nice to see these two again.

If you meant to say 307, I'm with you all the way. I'd love one of those in the yellow!

I did mean to say 307 Dave. :o

Case still makes something similar to both these patterns and Canal Street & Queen makes high-end versions I believe. Of course the Chinese have flooded the market with $12 copies of these patterns (Rough Rider comes to mind) so I think the tool up cost would be cost prohibative to short do collectors runs as the niche seems pretty full.

Unfortunely, somethings when gone are just gone forever.

How about in red all so on those two styles. I may have to beg for mercy or plead insantity after I bought a few of them. ;) :D :D :D HL
