A few weeks ago I took my kids out to camp in the scrubland. While there my son Daniel and I took a hike. I wanted to teach him how to find water and shelter. We ended up finding plenty of both and shot a little video while we were out.

Finding Water and Shelter

I had been past this little tangle of forest many times but I thought it was rather short, and simply backed up into a series of cliffs. It turned out to be a narrow draw that opened up into a little secluded valley. Ordinarily this is the kind of tangled undergrowth I would just avoid and walk around but it was hiding some great spots all this time. I guess it pays to hack after all. Mac

NICE very nice... Wish we had some termits mounds here so i could make a fire place out of one to chill by at night..

Good stuff as usual, thanks for sharing! I too have found a lot of neat stuff by wandering off the beaten path. Curiosity can really pay off!

Neato.

Whats your opinion of having a fire near/under that rock overhang?

Fiddleback,

I have done this many times here without any problems. One factor we don't have to deal with is ice cracking and weakening rocks. I try not to let the flames heat up the rock too much. If you keep the fire out from the base of the rock, the rock above is really quite high. The important thing is to keep the fire out of direct rainfall.

I did turn in to my hammock a little early before with one group. They were setting up to talk for the rest of the night if I didn't send them to bed so I told them we had a big day coming up. I rolled over and tried to get some sleep. A few minutes later the woods was just WAY too bright and I looked over at the rock where we had our fire. They had thrown the rest of the wood on the fire and the flames were actually beating against the rock, something I never do but had failed to mention to them. They got away with it. I did tell them to get back from it and knock the fire down.

I shot some video of that. Its at 1:40 or so of this clip (PER ARDUA)

I had another group of students once and two of them were being incredibly lazy, just hanging back and making me and the other student do all the work. I announced that everyone would be cooking on their own fires that night. Threse two guys got the message and bumbled around until near dark getting set up (cooking fresh killed quail no less). The other guy started razzing them mercilessly with quite colorful vocab when BAM one of his rocks exploded and dumped his water into his fire. I wish I had a video of that. Mac
