Found a time capsule

Howdy! This past summer, I helped my parents downsize and move to a senior condo complex. Going thru the mountain of stuff they had accumulated over a lifetime, Pop's 92 and Mom is 80, I got a box of my Dad's, Dad's things, and in it was this gem. A new in the box Buck 119 from the early 60's, as best we can tell. Still has the factory edge. Not sure what my Grandad planned for it, since he hunted and fished all his life in Montana. I have the last knife he carried which was a stag-handled Case XX. Here's some pics of the Buck.

are you getting messages to sell?

wow, what a treasure!

I love that old pamphlet also

I never knew that the 103 used to be the model 110. I wonder why they changed it (and didn't just give the current 110 a different number).

Also, what's with the light colored handles on the 110(103) and 118?

Melamine handles... rarest of the rare. I recall something about being prone to cracking if dropped in cold weather. We had green Melamine dishes when I was young, they seemed pretty indestructible in my memory. In all my years of collecting I've only acquired one, and in hindsight I regret balking at the price when I had the opportunity to buy some others.

Cool find!! A friend of mine just came across an old 119 at an antique shop and was kind enough to buy it for me. It appears to be a 1981, judging by the 3 micarta(red) spacers and Buck over 119 over USA, also has the black flap holster sheath. Can anyone tell me the steel on that model?

Do you think the person and book referenced in the description of the 118 knife is actually Col. Towsend Whelen and the book, On your own in the wilderness? That book was originally published though in 1958, so it would fit time wise if this knife and pamphlet date to 1960 or thereabouts.

Considering the flap sheath, possibly 1973-1977 - somewhere in there. 119 and 120 went to three spacers earlier than the other 100 Series. 440C steel.

Thank you TAH. Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but is 440c also the steel on my pre 86’ 501 esquire? Thanks again.

What an amazing find ! That’s a great looking 119 and the sheath, pamphlets and all in new condition. You can’t ask for better than that! I’m sure the hardcore collectors would pay handsomely for that 119! That is pristine!
