we have a cabin in oklahoma around the wister area. We go there on occasion and on my last trip i was walking through the woods down to the lake, i saw it laying on the ground. it is just the head, no handle. instead of a hammer or spike on the other end, its looks like a smoking bowl. it is older and is pitted, not too bad, but i was just seeing if aquiring a new handle for making one is a simple task. can i find a nice strong piece of hardwood and make it work? what are the best options? is there someone who specializes in this? i know it has to be well 90% sure its native american. not really caring if its authentic, but i think it is. had to clean it for a few ehours to get rust and gunk off. would love to have it set up to actually work with the bowl, not that i am going to use it, but my family is part Cherokee and Comanche so it would be killer to have it set up like a traditional hawk.. thanks for any suggestions..

Obligatory "this thread is worthless without pics" statement. It is fairly simple to carve your own hawk handle, especially if you have a spokeshave handy..

will post pic when im off work, we are slow and it just popped into my head. so yes there will be a photo later.

There's places that supply handle 'blanks' .. and you can asked for them to be center drilled for your pipe. You'll have to sand/shape the handle down to your hawk head. I assume it's a drop the handle thru the top type of hawk. If not, you'll have to pin it.

hmmm, tried ading a photo, no link or tiny url is working. what program or website do yall use to upload a photo

You need to use a .jpg link to post it here.
I copied the image code from the left of the photo at tinypic and put it in this reply:

I use photobucket - once you look at the photo, on the right you will see a box marked "Links to share this photo"and then copy the "IMG" line into the post.

got it, using the wrong link, just saw the forum link. (so Confusing forums are) the whit stuff inside the hols was an epoxy i used for a handle that obviously didnt last.

How did you clean it? If you used a sander or grinder.........sigh

Does the hole go all the way through the bowl?

It looks like a French design to me.
French Canadian...?

You should of waited to see if it was worth anything before you did anything to it might of been a valuable piece and collectors would of wanted it untouched . That's the first thing someone should have told you of course I could be wrong and it's worth nothing but I bet it is . If you are still looking for a haft email or PM me let you know where you can get one .

Wow! You striked gold! What you have there is a head from a tomahawk that belonged to a warrior from the Redsac tribe (circa 1850's). It's probably worth around $20,000!

That was a joke, it's most likely not worth anything but regardless it's still a very nice find.

HA i wish, maybe like 2.00 dollars. wither way it was a cool find, and the excitement got to me so i cleaned it instead of leaving it be. so now i guess im just trying to get it to look like a period piece and hang on the wall. all the handles i see are not round like this one. most are oval, any ideas where to locate?

I wonder if there are more in the area? Got a metal detector??

no i do not. i have thought about it though. its all wooded and untouched. i go there maybe once a year so i would have to plan on going for a few days too look.

Glad to hear a grinder wasn't taken to it. The shiny flash in the pictures makes it look ground down I guess...

It looks to be cast instead of forged.
I can't tell if it's a repro or not..

Second on the finished pics:thumbup:
