It is a 1 H.P. unit and I want to fit on it a round disk, in order to make me a disk sander. My questions are:
1. How can such a disk be made? Or where can I find it?
2. What material should I glue on this round plate and where can be found those sanding papers that will attaché it?
3. Will it be good for grinding to?
I will appreciate any idea or info.
Thanks in advance. Michael.

I actually bought a unit that some one had made from a motor mounted on an old sewing table. As for the sanding plate, you can usually buy those. What is the shaft size on the motor? Try Ebay and do a search for "sanding disk."The plate is usually made out of alluminum. As for the sandpaper disks, you'll have to ask someone more experienced with them. You can buy them online from http://www.bearwood.com/ABRASIVES-DISC.HTML, but I can't attest to the quality of their disks.

Rob Frink sells 9" aluminum disks - both totally flat and with a 1 degree bevel (this allows you to use the disk for flat items longer than 4.5" without scrubbing the other side of the disk): http://www.beaumontmetalworks.com/disks.html Some folks have made their own out of things like marine grade plywood or MDF with a micarta face -- with a bit of care, you can finish turning the disk in place on your motor. How fast is your motor?

An advantage of 9" disks is that you can use standard 9x11" abrasive sheets and cut them to fit (But you can also get them in premade 9" disk form.) A lot of folks use 3M Feathering Disk Adhesive (Type 2) for attaching the paper -- you can remove and reuse the disks (and the adhesive) - use some disposable plastic plates to plop the removed disk on (adhesive side down) to keep them clean and handy until you need them again. The 3M Feathering Adhesive is available lots of places, but here's one: http://www.usaknifemaker.com/store/3m-feathering-adhesive-5oz-tube-p-40.html
