Just noticed that there are 42 of us shar- er, forumites, idly hanging around the HI forum here in the middle of a work day (your boss knows what you're doing, right?:D ), and thought you might appreciate a reminder that there was a time when there was no such thing as a DotD. And check out those prices - These are the good old days:thumbup:

Thanks Berk! You're right. The prices have come down tremendously and the quality and selection is always improving as well. $175 for a 15" AK? I paid that for a few of those, and they are barely half that now. I'm sure Uncle Bill never dreamed that HI would have so many models for us to choose from at such great prices.

Good stuff Berk, gave me a profound touch of the sniffles, so much for being a tough guy eh? :o

You'll aways be a tough guy in my eyes, Sarge.

This place is as good or bad or indifferent as we make it- people, it's just people.

That is a great piece of HI history, Mr. Berkley.

Thanks for sharing it.

Mm, prices were high because UB had to pay a lot for expensive magazine ads, trying to gain an audience.

Nowadays, the audience is ready and waits for the knives!

It worked. He succeded. But sucess doesn't come without a lot of work.

Bill had a lot of vision, didn't he? And innovation. Imagine, 1998. Selling knives from Nepal, over the Internet.... Creating a market for a better khukuri. It's a great story.

That brings back a few memories, Berk. Thanks. Do you have any more pics of the old brochures?

Bob

Boy, that is an old brochure, before the advent of the 18" AK which turned out to be so many folks favorite.

Wow, and a letter from Uncle Bill. How special. I regret never knowing him. I hope you frame it or something. Thank goodness the prices have come down. Thank you for sharing Berkeley!;)

Darn old puter . How can I enlarge those images on my computer ? The printing just globs together a little too much .

It's not the computer. Berk, could you put up some higher res images? The ones up there are too small to read. Or, at least, they can just barely be made out.

Sorry about the quality - I was in a hurry to post and got the "File size too large" error message on the full-size scans, so just cut them down to screen size. Will play with them a bit and repost, along with a few more pages from the brochure. Anyone want to see a HI kora?

I hope these are a little easier to see - had to turn the sword page sideways to avoid shrinking it too much - either turn your laptop on its side, or lie on your side if you have a desktop ;) .
The kora (it's on the bottom of the pic, the text was reversed in the original) was never a big seller - Rusty had one, don't know who else.

Funny to read this thread. I have been thinking about all the emails from Uncle Bill I copied and saved. I just haven't had the strength to take them out and reread them yet.
