Found another clone of a Commander on eBay.
This one was easy, notice the raised screw in the back picture, good give away.
They never offer an original box or papers.

OOPS
He says it's real..

My good deed for the day.

looks legit to me..The raised screw meaning the pivot pin?..some of the older emersons had the "domed" pivot pins. This might not necessarily be a fake..

Cheers,
Nick

I saw a Commander clone at the Spy Shop at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. I think they were asking $60 for it, but the fit and finish were atrocious and it wouldn't even lock up properly. Had a lot of blade wobble in the open position. The guy behind the counter didn't even know what the wave was used for.

agreed, i have an older 7 that has the domed rear pivot pin/screw.

I am the seller. Some one just pointed me here. It is legit.I just bought it used from a real reliable source. Thanks all!

OK, My specwar has the same domed pivot pin. OOPS, mea culpa.

So given that I need more info, when did Emerson start adding the copyright notice about the wave to the right of the logo and numbering the blades under the thumbscrews on the Commanders?

My fake has torx instead of cross cut phillips... A different screw pattern than my 2006, a quarter inch shorter, no grooves in the back of the grip, smaller grooves on the top. The Emerson logo is slightly different, the central sword is even with the date but passes below it in the fakes 2000 logo [using a 2000 Raven for comparison]. The thumb disc quality, finish, isn't as good [discs with edge crosshatch machining, screw hole beveled, screws recessed].

Did the Commanders ever have a grind on the top side of the blade. My examples have the knife edge from the guard to the tip but no grind on top.

My Commander weighs 5.3 oz, the fake one 5.2 oz but to the hand the fake feels heavier. It's odd I can't explain it.

How different are the earlier Commanders from the current version?

Here are examples of a clone:

that clone is amazing..I could hardly tell the difference except for the silver thumbstub...

thats clone LOOKS pretty close, no doubt the best copy i have seen yet, all the other ones i have seen were not anyway near that close.

wow.

Oh, I'm not saying it's a bad knife. In fact the one I got is real nice just not the real goods. There are design differences [the back of the blade is different form my 2006 and Super, I'm assuming that the linerlocks might have different shapes. The Emersons closes the fake closes with 2 clicks] but until I get the correct torx wrench the knife stays together.

Is the "WeBeKnives" shop still there? They had quite a few Emersons last time I was there, and even picked up a 7A from them.

So, there is a seller who has a used 2000 for sale now, the pictures he's added are just too good to ignore. Take a look and compare to the clones, it's amazing. From the photos the only visible differences is the logo, thumb screw and scale screws,

So the 2000's have that angle on the back/top of the blade?

Looking at my new commander it's missing that.

The screw pattern is different. Like I said earlier, I don't have the correct size Torx to disassemble my fake, but I do have a Raven 2000. The Raven has a row of screws to join the scale to the liner, that is their purpose. In my 2006 Commander there are 5 screws 2 long screws on stagered either side to hold the knife together and the central pivot, seven for the Super Commander.

This change alone makes it easier and cheaper to construct and maintain. Three fewer holes in each liner. I figure just changing the way the knives are screwed together probably saved $.50-$1.00 per knife, made the assembly line move much smoother, generated less scrap. My little Commander is a 2006 numbered 8260. That little design change saved Emerson $5K - $10K for 2006, not a bad chunk of change. This little change improved the quality of the knife.

The blade, as you note, changed too. I count 4 design changes but will only mention the tapered top you notice. Without the top grind the knife is easier to manufacture, stronger too. Another series of steps that saves another $0.50-$1.00 a blade. Aesthetically I like the added grind, more dagerish, less tool.

I pulled the one I thought was fake. The seller says it's real.
The pictures I posted are from an "authentic fake". It uses TORX.
The other set is from an authentic 2000.
