Sako 85 Finnlight .308. I've been wanting this grail of a rifle for a while but always seemed out of reach. Well I lucked out and found one in the box for sale on consignment at a local outdoor store. It has only had a few rounds shot through it and looks new. Still need to get a scope and rings but will have it ready next week. Sorry for the barrowed pics, while post some up nex week with my Fiddlebacks.

congrats

.308 is my favorite round. I have shot many a deer w/ it. When I used to hunt my go to was a Remington Model 7.

2 8pointers in the same night.

Very nice Bob, congrats! I'm still hoping to find my grail...though I would have to trade for it if I found it right now. I want a stainless and synthetic 77/22 in .22 Hornet.

Congrats, that's really nice!

I've got a Nikon M-308 scope on my Gunsite Scout Rifle and can't say enough good things about how its tuned for that round. (if you're shopping and not set on something already)

That is a grail, congrats! I have a Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm Mag and a T3 Tactical in .308. After buying the .308 and seeing the quality right out of the box I bought the 7mm w/in a year. I got a great deal on a Zeiss Conquest for the 7mag and the tactical has a Nightforce with LaRue quick detach mount :) I've only fondled the Sakos so far but hope to get one someday!

Congrats Bob! It's always great when you find that grail and are able to take it home. My youngest daughter's name is Kimber and I'd love to bring home a Kimber Varmint in 22-250 and a Classic Carry Elite .45 but that's really dreaming.

Congrats! Sako makes an awesome rifle. I shoot a Tikka T3 in .270 right now. Love that gun! Planning on making some changes to it this winter.

Sweeet! Congrats, gotta love finding new loves. [emoji41]

Years ago I picked up a Sako in .30-06 at a Boy Scout charity auction. At the time I didn't know much about the brand. I thought the rifle was brand new when when bidding, and picked it up for what I thought was a steal. After receiving it in a box that looked as old as me, I decided to do a bit of research on the model and serial. Turned out to be made sometime around 1970-1971 (model L61R I think?). It was obviously someone's safe queen as it was in pristine condition with not even a hint it had ever been fired. What a beauty. I added rings and a Burris scope, and proceeded to contribute some new nicks and dings and made it my own. When I got it, it was over 25 years old.....and brand spanking new. Now with another 20 years put on it, it's part of our family, and will most likely be passed down to one of my kids.

Bob, and the rest, help me out.

I've been wanting to pick up a .308 deer hunter for quite a long time. Deer season opens tomorrow here, and this thread has got me on the move. Can't afford this, but looking anyway. Relying on my old cranky 30-30 lever for now.
Heading to take at the offerings at my favorite shop tomorrow. Stopped by a big chain store today though, and saw a few. Wondered if ya'll had a any opinions.

  • Winchester 70
  • Weatherby Vanguard
  • Remington 700
  • Ruger Gunsite Scout
  • Kimber 84
  • Ruger America

They had a beautiful Sako at a reduced price, but not in my caliber.

I'm open to thoughts and suggestions.

There's nothing wrong with a Marlin 30-30 Tony. It's probably taken more deer in our neck of the woods than any other rifle. That said, a .308 or .30-06 can reach out quiet a bit farther.

I agree Nathan, but I don't actually own this Marlin. It was loaned to me by a Navy pilot while he was deployed. He's now home and would like me to return it, so I need to replace it regardless. I'd rather move up to that .308, especially since I've gotten permission to hunt the corn fields across from my place, and the distances are a bit greater than the 30-30 can effectively handle.

The problem I have is not what to shoot, but rather where to shoot. I'm finding it very difficult to break into the midwest, being a south Louisiana kind of guy. It's killing me to see the canadian geese way up high when I'm used to seeing them in the La marsh.

Ruger America in the list you have here. My three boys and I have been using our Remington model seven .243 and they are superb little rifles as well. Yes, definitely a .308. It's a perfect all around cartridge especially in the 168gr.

BTW, this Sako 85 Finnlight is expensive but I found this one for a steal of a price, supposedly used but can tell it.
