Found my grail rifle today.

Tony, I don't think you can go wrong with any of those models. I would suggest you add the Tikka T3 to the list, just check it out when you're at the store. Cycle the action a couple times and pull the trigger. They sell themselves really.

That's a discontinued model. It's been replaced with the T3x which has a few improvements over the original with the recommendations taken from actual hunters. Phenomenal gun. About any bolt action today is quality. Just go find the one that feels right when you shoulder and cycle it. Tony, call me if you have any questions.

Definitely! I just refer to them all as the T3. Guess I should be a little more specific haha. The T3x improvements are awesome, I was glad to see Tikka respond to user requests. I also agree on the second point, though there are a few models of bolt action rifles out there that have some issues, most are very good.

When I was rifle searching I shouldered and played with about every one. New and used, old and modern. The Tikka action and trigger sold me. I've got a few friends who went out and got Tikkas after playing with mine.

Yea Tikka are really fine rifles. One of the smoothest actions out there. I had bought one for my dad and regret selling it after he decided not to hunt anymore.

Any thoughts on the Browning X-Bolt Hunter?

Or the Kimber 84 Classic? (A concern with this one is that it is so light - 5.5 pounds - that it may be a beast to shoot in .308)

I'll check out the Tikka. Hope someone near me has one.

Definitely gotta do something. I had a shot tonight, little 4 pointer, downhill, about 150 yards out. Missed him! I've missed paper, cans, steel gongs, etc., but never missed something I squeezed a trigger on that had a heartbeat, other than a random squirrel here or there. Totally my fault. It's opening day, and I didn't get home until there was only about 2 hours left of shooting light. I grabbed that old 30-30 and didn't bother to sight it in, even though I know the scope has been switched out on it since the last time I dusted it off. I knew better, but was in a hurry to get in the woods. Gotta get it sighted in tomorrow for sure.

The buck took off, and then bedded down. I managed to kick him back up three times before I lost the light, but only once did I have a decent shot - and the backdrop behind him was very questionable. A miss could have been dangerous, so I let him go.

If I'm returning this rifle anyway, I might as well replace it with the caliber I want, and get it set up the way I'd like it.

i got a 84classic in 7mm08 one year as a christmas bonus from my boss. I put a German Zeiss 3-9 x 36 iirc on it, I took it to the range to sight it in and could not get it to group in my hat, I gave it back to my boss. YMMV

on a side note...i had a Browning Micro Medallion in 22Hornet and it was the best "walkabout" rifle ever for shooting Prairie Dogs in Wyoming.

never shot my X-Bolt in .308

(i worked in a gun shop for 18yrs before Andy gave me a chance):)

The Browning X-bolt is an excellent choice. One hunter on my property recently killed a nice buck at a verified 470 yards with a .308 X-bolt scoped with a Burris Eliminator III. DOI.

I have a browning a-bolt stalker SS with the boss. It's in 30-06 and is the most accurate rifle I've ever own. With cheap ammo it spit .625" 3-shot @ 100yrds. Fine rifles.

My A-bolt is in .300 Win Mag. Really smooth action and more accurate than I am.

Best lightweight whitetail killer I had- Win 70 Carbine in 250-3000/ Leup 1-5.
Best ever and my grail- GAP Rock Jr. .308/ Leupold 3.5-10 M3.

Rem 700 LVSS in 7mm-08 W Nikon 2-7 is a good second.

I miss them all.

Bill

I think it's pretty tough to go wrong with Browning. I've heard good things about the x-bolt.

Not a huge Kimber fan...

I bought a Moss-berg Predator MVP in .308 this year. My Brother's Burris scope on his 30-06 was acting weird. So the day before they left, at 4 pm we had a big problem! He was heading the next morning to Canada Bear hunting. I swapped scopes around to put one on my new rifle. I put my 4-12x Leopold VX-R Fire dot scope on this new .308, and sited it in.

He got his 250 lb black bear with one shot! Hell of a way to get that first kill with a new rifle!

Only thing is with the short barrel you better have hearing protection ON..... it's almost as loud as my .338 Lupua!

Hey Tony, was considering offering to let you borrow my 336 in .35 for the season, but talked to RLo yesterday. Said you stopped by with something really nice. Now go choot sumpin Hootie!

Carl,
Thanks tremendously for that offer! I am sincerely grateful. Rick is correct though, I'm quite adequately set up for anything within the 150 yard range (unless I dust the old .308 M1A off...and then I can really reach out there a ways). If I'm on my own, I'm lugging around an old Marlin 30-30. I got the scope dialed in now after missing a 150 yard shot the other day. Of course that is the only buck I've seen so far.

If my boy(s) are with me, the Marlin goes to them an I take up my Uberti 1873 in .357 (and honestly, I prefer it). This is the one Rick is talking about. Of course all the leather work is his.

This is sunrise yesterday morning. The fog is actually haze from the local forest fires. The woods are smoky, and you can feel it in your eyes and throat.

But, this morning was stunning! No bucks, but three fat does at 50 yards. Ahhh...I continue stalking the elusive beast.

Great pics Tony. You'll get there soon as long as you leave your "Hunting Buddy" at home [emoji12]

RLo was right on 'bout that Ube, very nice rifle. I've got a Henry BB in .357 that drives tacks. Wouldn't hesitate a 100 yarder if the shot is clean, but then that's really not my style. I like to hear them breathing before I bust a cap, just the way I was raised.
Great pics Tony, will be sending you some other pics to look over (maybe in the am).
