Found out why the H1 appealed to me

Just picked up a used Fallkniven H1 from a fellow forum member. Great knife. I'd never handled one, but I always found the blade shape oddly appealing. Didn't know why until I had the H1 in my hand and noticed how close it is in size and shape to the Marbles Plainsman - another great knife.

Not sure how the H1's thickness and convex edge will compare to the Plainsman's conventional blade geometry and thickness when it comes to field dressing and skinning deer and bear. Have to wait a few months to find out.

The H1's handle is much better than the Plainsman's handle. The handle is a bit short for me, and the choil is too small for my index finger. I've often thought of grinding the Plainsman's finger guard down until it was flush with the handle all around. With larger hands, I find the typical Marbles handle too tight. Wouldn't be a problem if the finger guard and pommel didn't protrude so much on most of their models. Love Marbles blades, but not so enthusiastic about their handles.

Pics of the two knives together.

I enjoy my H1 as well. Even more since I put mahogany scales on it. It's just an all around great knife. I'm a Fallkniven junkie. Enjoy your new toy!!

Thanks.

Any chance you could post some pictures of the H1 with the mahogany scales.

Sorry no camera. Also knife is in Lake George, and I'm in NYC at the moment

No problem.

I often go to Lake George. Great place. Friend has a cabin on the North end of the lake.

Regarding the knives, the more I look at the Plainsman next to the H1, the more similarities the two have. Blades are the same thickness, which surprised me. The Plainsman feels thinner because the grind starts at the top edge of the blade rather than down the face a ways - like on the H1. The Plainsman is convex ground, too. Much more subtle due to the high grind line, but still a convex grind to a very keen edge. Interesting similarities.

Same thickness at the handle. The full/high-grind on the Plainsman creates a taper, while the H1 is full thickness for most of it's length.

Subtle convex grind on Plainsman. Not a great photo of the surface, but definitely a convex grind. Similar, in fact, to the F1 grind, but feels much thinner than either the H1 or the F1.

Side by side shots, again.

I much prefer the sheath on the Plainsman. No strap, but knife nestles deep in the sheath and fits tightly.

I love lake George. My time is split between here( NYC) & there, as I'm a truck driver. Mostly heavy equipment, dozers, excavators etc. I'm in north Bolton, 6miles from Bolton landing. Beautiful area. Used to be one of the best kept secrets, now however I see adds for lake George area on cable in the city. More n more crowded every year.

I like both of those knives. Nice pics too. Thanx for sharing them. My favorite n primary woods carry is my Fallkniven volcano with the H1 or a Cold Steel Outdoorsman in a pack as back up. Sometimes I'll just carry the H1 & my roselli axe when spending a nite or two up the mountain at a small pond with some good fishing.
Did you ever get the kolt model or am I misremembering? I really like the steel used in the kolt n volcano. It's easily maintained n gets screaming sharp when finished with a good stropping. Enjoy the knife. It will serve you well.

I do have a Kolt model and really like it. I carry a Kolt, and an Enzo Trapper in D2. Seldom take anything larger in the woods. Estwing hatchet or cut-down camp-axe if chopping is expected. I have a Browning Barker Crowell knife that is a great chopper, too. Goes thru trees like butter and cuts prime rib better than any other knife I've seen. Don't carry that in the woods much, though. Seldom need a chopper. The Volcano looks like a great knife, too. I doubt it would see much use if I got one, but it's dang purty.

Below is a photo of my daily carry items. Just the S&W 357 and the two knives. I don't carry the bottle of Bulleit Bourbon. It usually stays home next to the 308 and the tequila.

Hi. Good catch . I also think the H1 is a great knife. Several years ago I was torn between the F1 and H1. I was able to try both. Considering I spend a lot of more time in hiking/camping types of activities compared to hunting (today basically zero :(), I went for the F1. The H1 blade is thick but it managed to outperform thinner knives as the edge is very thin and acute. I prefer the H1 handle comfort to the F1 one. H1 still works well on wood and is probably stronger than F1 when prying apart and dig in woods. Not designed for food preparation besides dressing games, in my opinion (I remember I struggled with potatoes, apples, carrots, etc. :)) but it gets the job done. Very nice knives! Thanks for the pics!

Nice gun porn. Enjoyed the read.

Carry em in good health. Thanx for sharing pics. That kolt looks well loved(used).
In and around the city I carry a Fallkniven juni as a necker. Perfect size for most things that arise during the day. Most non knife folk think it's cute, which worx for me, as my other edc is usually 4" folder. Lately it's been a Begg/Reate kwaiken. Others are spyderco vallotin sub hilt d/a, Al Mar sere 2000 d/a, super cqc8 & Lone wolf lobo cocobolo d/a.
I'd like to get the GP model at some point. Looks classy to me.

Thanx again for sharing the pics.
