Found something this morning...

Had some extra time before leaving for school this morning so I decided to spend some time looking back through my knives. While u was doing this, I found one of my favorite knives when I was younger. It is still probably one if the best knives I have. I came across my Gerber Paraframe I. I had forgotten how light and comfortable this blade was, and also was shocked when I did a paper test. This knife has never been sharpened, and has been very abused, however it was still able to slice through paper with little effort. If you have found any memories of yours, or have thoughts on this knife please respond!

The Paraframe was my first knife, and worst knife. Terrible lockup, blade play in every direction, uneven grind, garbage steel, different sized thumbstuds and more. I had to sharpen it constantly just from opening some packages, otherwise it would get so dull it wouldn't even catch on my fingernail. Pretty much turned me off from Gerber.

Exactly the same experience here. I still have the small paraframe and can't believe there was a time when I thought it was a "good" knife.

Well, to be fair, he could be talking about one of the USA made Paraframes I guess. I heard those were somewhat decent, but the Chinese ones I've only ever heard were garbage.

One man's trash is another man's treasure! :o

I don't know where mine was made, but after being put through more abuse than any of my knives, it has vet little if any blade play, and lockup us wonderful... The thumb studs are mediocre at best, but overall I was happy I found it. I also have one of the minis but it isn't comfortable in my hand anymore...

Only had one gerber in my life, a mini paraframe I got as a gift. I've never used it.

I was going through my folders last night and I found one I hadn't seen in a while. SOG mini X-Ray Vision, ATS-34. Heavily used to the point that it has gone from a tanto to a drop point. I loved this knife. Got it when I was 20. I keep it for sentimental value now. Its 15 years old, and sharpened to the point it would be difficult to make sharp again.

When did Gerber/Fiskars start making them in China? Since this kid is 15, I believe, "younger" probably means a couple years ago.

Its one of the garbage ones. And as for the "very abused," "never sharpened," "sliced though paper with little effort" claims? Unfortunately, gotta say "pics or it didn't happen."

Man, I hate to see a thread where someone gets their dreams $#!+ on, but I also only own one Gerber and it's a paraframe - because I got it as a gift from a good friend.

That knife cut the absolute F@#$ out of me right off the bat (not from use but from opening/closing it). It has almost nothing to hold onto and my right-ring finger slipped into one of those guillotine holes. Fortunately that edge dulled down from using it like twice, so my fingers are now safe.

It has what appears to be a detent and a detent hole, but they come nowhere close to each other when it closes so the pivot is uber-stiff to keep the blade from falling open (and that works since the pocket-clip is partially held on by the pivot screw?!?!). Mine doesn't have blade-play (partially because I used it maybe 3 times and put it in the drawer), but the lock-bar is almost touching the other scale, so I wouldn't really trust it with anything other than sitting in the drawer.

The thumb-studs on mine are about a quarter of a mile long... on a knife with absolutely no girth to it at all in the handle. So if it's in the pocket, it's going to stab you either with the blade that swung open due to the detent issues, or the gigantic thumb-studs (I suppose I could use them as glass-breakers).

I'll say this for it though - it came out of the box better centered and sharper than a few of Benchmades I've received over the years :D

Dang, what a lame bunch of responses.

Glad you enjoy your knife, Ccnati. That's what counts. Now don't forget to hunt down all the hating responders posts' like Internet Rambo and squelch their joy. They drew first blooooood!! ;)

Watch out gang, we got some defenders of the realm here. I'm outta here before they start broadswording people.

I don't know why you guys are complaining what would you expect from a cheap gerber knife that on top of that is made in china? Maybe the paraframe isn't a favorite for some but gerber isn't bad. The gerber bear grylls folding knife I have is pretty good for the price. I paid $20 for it and I got more than I expected in my opinion. A gerber knife should be anybody's first knife they aren't the best but they are better then other cheap china made knives.

Why get a cheap, inexpensive knife when there are a ton of good, inexpensive knives out there? What do I expect for 20 bucks? How about a Mora and an Opinel.

Lets be honest did you really know that much about knives when you got your first one? I know I didn't my first knife I got at a flea market because I thought it looked cool now I know good from bad but I didn't know better knives existed at that time and maybe you did know a lot about knives but not everyone does
