My wife's had this tin for a while in the storeroom, I've had my eye on it and finally managed to appropriate it! It originally had some biscuits in it from Tesco.

It looked the perfect size to put a nalgene bottle into...

It's quite thick stainless steel, certainly as thick as any of the camping pans I have seen, with a tight-fitting strong lid. It also fits into the Maxpedition bottle bags perfectly with the lid on the bottom. Just takes a little effort to get it out again but not too much.

Now it just needs a few holes around the top edge, for a wire hanger.

I think it would make an excellent addition to a nagene/guyot bottle kit - it's now a permanent fixture in mine.

Sweet! Wonder where she got it?

It had a Tesco label still on the bottom, that's a supermarket in the UK. The tin has been around for a long time though, I think she got it a few years ago with some posh biscuits in. I'll take a look in the store next time I shop but I've never noticed them in there myself.

It had just been used for keeping old/spare spoons in - I think my use is much better!

I bought a trio of similar SS cans, 3.25" ID x 4.5" tall w/out SS cap, at a home furnishings store, either 'Marshalls' or 'T J Max', a few year's back for ~$7. Check local 'clearance' stores, like 'Big Lots' or 'Tuesday Morning' here in the southeast. One has macaroni noodles, another chocolate chip cookies, and the third has lifesavers -for now... Oddly, I have this clear glass decanter bottle full of Altoids - gotta wonder where the tins went!

Very cool find, I would have totally stolen that from my wife. :D I love finding useable gear that wasn't meant to be gear.

Nice improvisation. I love it.

I had a similar idea: Snow Peak 700 (I'm pretty sure it was called the 700).

There is a gap between the cup and bottle. The tape serves to keep it from rattling. I suppose it also serves as a bit of back up tape.

not to hijack the thread but how do you like the sabercat?

Sorry - I've only just spotted your question.

I've only been out a couple of times with it but I like it so far. The wet and cold winter weather has made me carry a backpack with extra gear in it recently.

I have a somewhat love-hate relationship with waistpacks. I'm not a slimline model and that means I have to tighten the pack on quite strongly to avoid it gradually slipping down. If you have hips and a waist, it would probably be more comfortable. The love part is that I like the freedom of movement around my upper body that it gives, and the ventilation benefits compared to a backpack.

But those things are common to any waistpack really.

The sabrecat is cavernous, fits fairly comfortably and rides quite well all things considered; better than any others I have tried. As with all Maxpedition kit it is well made and robust, and has the usual good assortment of pockets and straps.

I think it's about the right size for this sort of pack. Big enough to be worth carrying and capable of holding enough without having things dangling off the outside. Not so big that it feels awkward to wear. Just right, for me anyway.

The hip belt is really quite comfortable, even strapped on tight. With the water bottle holder on the side, it is a little unbalanced unless I carry a couple of heavy knives on the other side ;) The water bottle also restricts arm swing a little but that doesn't bother me. I did notice a tendency to rest my arm on top of the bottle holder (lazy!)

I am considering trying shoulder straps on it; Max do some but but Spec Ops do nicer ones. That would allow me to loosen the belt a little when carrying a heavy load, yet still benefit from lack of a back (ventilation).

Anyway, I'll try to get out a bit more with it and try a few things out. I'll report back when I have.
