Found this axe when moving out

Is the WPA a factory stamp or was this possibly a tool belonging to the "Work Programs of America" that provided employment during the Depression? The WPA looks like it is different font and lettering and may have been added after the factory--KV

I would bet that it is (with the WPA stamp added for a similar reason that hotel names are put on towels).
 
Unless you can date the axe it seems hard to say for sure. Works Progress Administration was the first thing that popped to my head as well. On the other hand it could have been owned by Walter P Amundson or William P Anderson, etc. I think it looks totally safe to say that was stamped on post-purchase and not at the factory.
