I was digging around in the back of the gun closet today and found this new hawk. Well I bought it about 12 years ago but it got set back and forgotten. I don't know if these pictures of the head are good enough to judge but what do you think this would need for Mods to be a good chopper/splitter.

It is marked M & W Canada on one side and Black Hawk on the other side

Included in the shot is the knee of my long handles:D

i dont think you can really make much of a splitter out of a hawk, but you can definatly maka e good chopper. i would just take the edge back to thin out the grind, then it should chop pretty well.

That looks pretty nice. The edge is thick but the head looks good sized and the bit is wide enough for serious chopping IMO.

Thin out that grind!! :eek:Damn its thick!!

Not much you can do with a hawk for splitting, but they do make a nice chopper.

Yeah it's thick. I forgot that I had it but remembered after I started looking it over. I used to me into the Buckskinning stuff and I bought this and one other hawl at the same time. I use the other often and keep it in the Jeep.

Nice Hawk...*cough*

i could be wrong, but it looks like it is cast, and based on how thick the edge is, i would hazard the guess that it was intended as a display piece.

even if it is something like mild steel or wraught iron, it could be made to cut...the edge retention wouldn't be good at all though.

if i am wrong, and it is good steel that has been well heat treated, then i would say thin the edge way out and it would probably be a good little chopper. from here, it looks like it would probably split about as well as a 14" Fiskars...which is to say that it would be adequate for small wood and a bother for large wood (though possible)
