Four new knives! Guess which one is THE sharpest ?

Hi kat,

Welcome to Blade Forums (and the Madness!)

I guess you missed the part where I listed the winner on page one. At any rate, it appears there is no fooling Blade Forums members. The Opinel No. 8 was indeed THE sharpest of the four.
Note, this is not to say that the other three weren't sharp.....they were all very sharp. But, as one member pointed out, due to it's thin blade, the Opinel is SCARY sharp! I don't know why I waited so darn long to buy an Opinel. Geeeezee.....for about fifty dollars, one could buy a MORA, an Opinel, a Svord and an Old Hickory Butcher/Skinner knife! Add in a SAK (Swiss Army Knife) and you've covered the basic bases pretty darn well on a budget.

Is it 12c27 or Inox? It's been a while for me. Mine is boxed up and "safe" somewhere I'm pretty sure. :o Those fine grained no carbide ( or no large carbides anyway) type steels are fine grained and can get really sharp. Eka knives with 12C, Douk Douks, and Mercator K55's are similar. Easy to sharpen, burr so clean you can hear it snap off at times. Not exactly "super" steels but they can take wicked edges nevertheless.

The 12C27 is what the Inox blade is made of, vs their carbon steel that is not as good. Opinel switched to 12C27 about 2000 or 2001 or so. I used to use the carbon steel Opinel's, but the stainless blades are actually better. The 12C27 is good stuff, and it's what the stainless Mora's are made from.

I didn't mean the sharpest, I meant the NEXT one you are getting. You were happily agonizing over what size. Try the 12 carbone; you lika him real good. ;)

Hi Kat,

Ah....my mistake. Well....I need to bask in the Sunshine of my new NO. 8 for a bit before I make any rash decisions lol. That being said.....yes indeed, I'm thinking either the NO. 10 or NO. 12 Opinel.

I have a #10. It is a bit big when unfolded. I have a #7, that's a decent size. I think a #8 would be a perfect size to me

No doubt mars51 the 8 carbone is, in my opinion, the ideal all around opinel. The 12 carbone, however, is BIG, hand filling, really interesting, different. I received my 12 slim inox bubinga today; if I had It before the 10, I never would have bought the 10 slim inox (much as I like it). THIS is the reason for our addiction, soooo many fun, shiny, sharp, knives...calling...calling. UH I have to go now, my shrink is calling. ;)

Kat,

Ahhhh! I too have been Eyeballing that nice looking Opinel No. 12 Slim line (NOT made in China.....see my other thead) knife. So.....do you think that the No. 12's blade might be too thin/flexible ? I'm really interested in this model (love the looks) for "food prep" but.....I was a bit.....unsure when I read the product info describing this knife not being meant for "harder" use. I wonder if I might be better served with just a good ol' "regular" size No. 10 blade as opposed to the Slim line ? Kat, please let us know your thoughts on this Slim line knife after you've had some time testing it out. Yea....I too think I need to talk to a Shink! I have the same damn problem. Oooooh.....shinny. Oooh.....sharp! I feel like the main character in the Twilight Zone ep. "The Fever".
In my case......the knives calling out to me.....Tom....my.....Tom....my!

HARDBALL, I've now played with it a bit (the 12 slim inox bubinga that is ;) ) and my conclusions are-insert drum roll-it is beautiful; the wood is very, very nice and the blade has a high mirror polish. It will be great for food prep both when I get bored with my dedicated prep knives at home and even better in the field. It would also be a good fishing knife. However, it IS very slim and flexible and I don't see it being appropriate for many other purposes (the 12 carbone is MUCH bigger and more sturdy), BUT, great looking, fun, sharp and shiny, $26, I am a happy man. :D By the way, good and appropriate video. It was nice seeing the old, old vegas. I remember the episode but even I'm not old enough to remember the El Rancho Vegas (I do remember the Dunes, Landmark, Stardust etc.)

How do you like the mini Peasant? I've been carrying mine daily since last December, don't want to stop. I put a larger stop pin so the blade does not touch the rear screw (doesn't happen to everyone, apparently). If you like to see how, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRSFC--GDkI.

Oooh.....I've got to get an Opinel 12! Just....because. Then again....perhaps a No. 10 ? If I had the "toy money" I'd buy the No. 13 for it's WTF factor.

The Opinel 12 is already getting kinda comically large. Like you, I've debated picking up a No. 13 as well, just for the "WTF factor". ;)

Here's the No. 12 next to a No. 8.

Hi guys,

Kat, nice review! I'm happy to hear that you are liking your new Slim line No. 12. No doubt, the No. 12 is a slick looking Opinel. I'm thinking
(for my use).....I'd be better off going for a non-Slim line Opinel (at least for the time being). Kat, enjoy your new "shinny/sharp" Opinel. Oooh, I'm glad you enjoyed the old Twilight Zone ep.

Dogstar.....I find the SVORD Mini Peasant a neat, unique knife. It feels quite good in the hand despite it's small size (there is also a larger Peasant).
Once sharpened, this Friction Folder is VERY Sharp! Personally, I think this style/type knife is something "I" would not EDC on my person. I will however keep it handy (Car, Pack, etc.) It's a cool/unique Knife but it takes a little bit of time to get use to it's operation/design. That is to say, it's not difficult to operate, just different from a SAK for example. I showed my four new knives to my friend/Boss and.....of the four.....he liked the SVORD the best. I was a bit surprised as he seemed to "dismiss" my most expensive (and last showed to him) TOPS Bird and Trout Knife. When I acquired as to why the SVORD was his favorite, he responded because it was "unique". Flarp....thank you for that awesome picture! Wow! I didn't realize that the No. 12 is (as you said) almost comically large! I WAS thinking about the No. 12 as a "Woods" knife but.....now after having seen the picture you posted of the No. 12 along side the No. 8.....I'm now thinking I might be better served with the No. 10 Opinel. That being said.....I'd still like to own the No. 13 for it's WTF factor!

Regards,

HB, the peasant is very easy to operate once you get the right technique. You can see it in the beginning of the video link in my previous post (my channel is not monetized). Easy one handed operation.
