1) What knife would you choose as a survival knife?
2) What knife do you use for hunting?
3) What is your EDC knife?
4) Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?

You can answer whatever questions pertain to you, but you must post a reason for each question you answer. The knife does not have to be a JK.

don't think my answers are very illuminating, sorry

1) What knife would you choose as a survival knife?
I do not know I have one I put in this category, I've thought about it and the ones below don't leave me feeling empty handed
2) What knife do you use for hunting?
I don't hunt, but when (the few times I've had the chance to try) fish I use the JK Toby's knife because it's versatile, strong with 3/32" with a decent point as well for cutting into things
3) What is your EDC knife?
JK Toby's Knife and/or (typically) a Victorinox alox SAK cadet with a saw added - just the tool line up, I can't stop with the JKTK and even when I try another small fixed blade I end up going back to it, nostalgia, maybe, and a belief that the best knife to have on you is the one you have the most experience with, I suppose it can handle anything I need after all and makes me feel happy
4) Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?
JK Hiker and/or JK Toby's Knife and a SAK with a saw (not always the cadet) - see above, the hiker just strikes me, I don't know why really, I normally like a more definite point but the lines on the line are attractive to me,it has a longish blade but also the design uses the full length of it the up sweep on kicking in fairly late, This strikes me as useful when making kindling etc, and even though it's not a kitchen designed knife i doubt I'd have trouble eating a steak or cutting up cheese with it while at the same time I know JK 01 well enough to trust it to do whatever tougher task I may come across while providing a full grip in any position.

1) I guess it depends on the definition of "survival". One knife to rely on for everything? A chunk of a knife that will never break?

I would probably pick up a BK-2, but I have no doubt that my BK-16 or soon to be Trapline would fit the role well.
The latter are both slim enough to cut well, and 1095 and JK O-1 have proven to be steels that can take a hell of a beating.

2) So far, I haven't been a very successful hunter, but have skinned and de-limbed a couple squirrels with my ZT 0560. Skinned part of a deer with a Benchmade Griptilian, but a good old no name filet knife did a lot of the work. The only reason I used those knives is because they were what I had on me at the time.
Again, I think the Trapline will be well suited for this task, as well.

3) Schrade 8OT. I have been carrying this knife since June of last year. Before that it was a Spyderco UKPK for a couple years.
My places of employment are not necessarily knife friendly, but people don't seem to throw a fit about slow opening, slip joint knives.
The reason I chose the 8OT, is because my great grandfather carried a little Schrade stockman (perhaps a 34OT). He got by just fine with a little slip joint, so there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to, as well.

4) Not really. Lately it has been my Griptilian or my Cooper's Hawk, but it could just as easily be another knife. We have bobcats in the area, so the main qualification for a woods blade is quick access. Yes I know that most woods critters are more afraid of me than I am of them, but I am a paranoid sob.:D
However, mushroom season is coming up, so I will be spending a significant amount of time in the woods, and the Cooper's Hawk should make a dandy Morel cuttin' blade.

1) Big Mack Cutlass of course. With it's heft and length there is nothing It won't do.
2) Rule #9 and Shrade Sharpfinger. With those two blade shapes, I can skin and clean anything.
3) EWOK or Rule#9 and Tin Knife. The EWOK and Tin Knife are small enough to be invisible to crazy people that are scared of knives. The Rule #9 is a perfect knife for every day use.
4) It depends on the hike but I generally carry the Rule #9 or Cutlass. I don't think I will ever need anything more than those two.

5) I always have either a Benchmade 710 or a Spyderco Endura 4 clipped in my pocket and a slipjoint in both front pockets. I've become addicted to Schrades 1095 and always have at least one Old Timer with me.

dandy little knife that, I like the stockman pattern and found this an the flea market a week or so ago for mot much monies, had to clean her up a little though, sorry your post made me think of it

I only have two Old Timers left (used to have a full, complete set, in an old Schrade display case) and they are a used 8OT, and a new, in the box, 34OT my daughter bought me about 10 years ago.

4) Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?

1) i don't really have a survival knife per se. i suppose it would be the knives i carry most in the woods, since that is when things are mostly likely to go wrong in my life. so, i guess the answer would be whatever fixed blade i'm carrying (VT Hunter right now) and the Vic Farmer i always have on me.

2) I got the VT Hunter to be my go-to hunting knife...from deer to squirrel to duck, and even fish. I am excited to test her out this year.

3) EDC knife is the Vic Farmer. That is always with me. I have also been carrying the Spyerco PM2 that i got from Cooper at the gathering. it sits in my car when i am at work, but otherwise i have it on me. thanks Coop!

4) all my answers seem to be the same. :D Vic Farmer and i usually clip a fixed blade to either my belt loop or shoulder strap on my pack. again, it will probably be the VT Hunter this year. i will also now be bringing the PM2 with me, as well. i am interested in trying out the PM2 on a fish. with the pointy tip and general blade shape, i think it could work as a trout/perch knife.

1) What knife would you choose as a survival knife?

If I had to grab one knife it would be the Treeline. It's big enough without being too big and could do pretty much everything I would want it to do. I know I could not break it. Second choice would be the Kephart.

2) What knife do you use for hunting?

For years, my go to hunting knife has been a Carbon V CS Master Hunter. It does a great job of field dressing and skinning. For processing, I use the Master Hunter as well as an old carbon steel knife from a meat packing plant that has been re-ground. It's basically a razor sharp boning knife with a custom sheath made from an old belt and duct tape. Moving forward, the Master Hunter would be replaced with the Trapline.

3) What is your EDC knife?

Most common carry is the JK "Snubnose", followed by the Kentucky Fieldmate or my Manix 2 XL. I also carry a slippy as well every day. That varies quite a bit but includes SAKs, Camper or Scout knives, Stockman or Sodbuster patterns. A Congress or Trapper gets tossed in there as well. Today, it's an old carbon Camillus Camper. I carry a backup folder (Orange BM Grip) and backup fixed blade (Izula) in my EDC backpack.

4) Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?

If it was a day hike, I would go Trapline or Fieldmate. Longer and I might grab the Treeline or Kephart. Bumming would be my normal EDC. If I want to do some bushcrafting, I would toss a Mora Triflex in the bag as well.

What knife would you choose as a survival knife?
The Puukko that you are making me, it’s a timeless design that is still relevant.

What knife do you use for hunting?
The Puukko that you are making me. I use a Stromeg Puukko currently and am looking forward to the thicker steel and the full tang.

What is your EDC knife?
Swiss army knife and Koster Bushcrafter, the Swiss army is just darn handy and the Bushcrafter is a stout knife that I have found to be a really good “go to” fixed blade.

Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?
Swiss army knife and the Koster Bushcrafter. Same as above.

You can answer whatever questions pertain to you, but you must post a reason for each question you answer. The knife does not have to be a JK.

1. I think just about any fixed blade I own would suffice. I'l go out on a limb though and say my Michigan Trail knife because it sees a lot of use and I'm very comfortable using it. I think it is big enough for all but a few jobs, yet small enough for comfortable carry and it can do the smaller jobs easily. Another model that would be seriously considered would be my Kephart - for the same reasons.

I think my survival situation would dictate my choice of tool(s). In certain areas I'd probably choose a machete and in other areas my knife of choice would probably be an axe.

2. I haven't hunted since I have lived in NJ (because of their ridiculous gun laws) but when I did hunt (and I used to hunt a lot) I almost always relied upon my pocket knife. I'd guess that it was probably an Old Timer stockman. If I were to choose one fixed blade for hunting chores it would almost certainly be the JK CBK - it was designed with hunting in mind. A second choice would be my Toby's Knife - it is quick, nimble and would make for a fine hunting blade.

I do fish though and I've used a variety of knives to clean fish. I do have a Rapala (it is excellent) but it seems that I frequently use other knives to clean fish. Sometimes that knife is my Buck 371, sometimes it is a fixed blade (like the Michigan Trail or Toby's knife).

3. A Buck 371. I've carried a stockman most of my life and the 371 is an excellent version of that pattern. Over the years I've learned that just about any cutting job can be accomplished with a stockman pattern and I almost feel naked without one.

4. Other than the Buck 371 (which is always with me) the answer is no. I'll carry different fixed blades depending upon my mood and the reason I'm out in the woods. If I know I'm going to be doing some carving I'll carry my Trapline or a Mora. If I'm just bumming around I frequently carry the Michigan Trail or the EDC Kephart. At other times I'll grab a knife that I haven't used in awhile, just so I get some time using it.

1) What knife would you choose as a survival knife?
Probably my ESEE6 -- the handle is a good fit for me, the steel can be sharpened on a piece of road gravel or a river rock if nothing better is around, it's short enough for fine work and long enough for chopping down 2-3" saplings if I needed to make a shelter, I like drop points, etc...
2) What knife do you use for hunting?
JK Original. nice deep belly, good sized handle, just a little drop to the point, enough point to pierce, thick enough spine to crack joints.
3) What is your EDC knife?
Vic Huntsman in the front left pocket with my car keys and a variety of blades in the right pocket, depending on what the plan is for the day -- may be a fixed blade/necker, slipjoint, or locking blade.
4) Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?
depends on the day or situation -- I tend to prefer 4" drop points for camping and day hikes because they fit well in the tool pocket on my carpenters or the duluth firehose pants I prefer to wear when spending significant time in the woods.

1) What knife would you choose as a survival knife?
I don't really have any specific knife designated as a "survival knife"
2) What knife do you use for hunting?
I usually carry a kabar marine corp fighting knife in my pack and a small fixed blade for dressing out deer.
3) What is your EDC knife?
I rotated my EDC weekly. It consists of 1 folder and a small fixed blade like a JK EWOK, JK anniversary EDC
4) Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?
I bring a small fixed blade for most cutting tasks and a hatchet for a little heavier tasks

When I receive my JK knives my plan is to use my pocket Kephart for EDC and my HD kephart for a hiking/survival type knife. For now I'll answer with the knives I use or would use.

1) What knife would you choose as a survival knife?
I own a few knives so this is a tough choice but right now I'd have to say my BRKT prototype Magnum Fox River. This is probably my favorite knife overall. It has a 5 5/8" cutting edge and 4 1/2" handle. Big enough to handle most any task, while it can still be carried easy enough.

2) What knife do you use for hunting?
Winter is my busiest time of year for work so I haven't been in a couple of years but I do enjoy deer hunting. The knife I carried hunting the last few years I went was a Marbles Sport. I've had this knife quite a few years and it fits my hand nice. I really like the blade shape and it's a great size for carrying just about anywhere.

3) What is your EDC knife?
I was carrying a BM 710 or mini grip but recently I have been carrying a SAK one hand Trekker. I chose the Trekker because I wanted a knife with a few other tools but without the bulk of most multi-tools. I also like the one handed feature and the locking blade.

4) Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?
BHK Bushcrafter or Bushbaby. Both are very similar with the Bushcrafter being a little larger. I like the round style handles on these and and the blade shape works well for most any chore. They are both made from o1 steel which I really like as well. I also carry a few items in my possibles bag when hiking and usually have a folder in it for back up. I also have Gransfors Bruks mini hatchet that I may carry some this year for hiking. It's small enough to choke up on and use like a knife but being a hatchet would probably do better at chopping than most knives of the same size (10 1/4" handle, 2.5" cutting edge, 11oz). I haven't used this hatchet much but so far I like it. It's small, easy to carry and sharp as a razor.

My JK Combat Survival Kit - since it has the farmer and the robust JK Combat in once nice package. In a survival situation I am not going to be worrying about slicing onions or carrots.

2) What knife do you use for hunting?
I don't hunt.
3) What is your EDC knife?
Vic Waiter and a ZT0560 -
The vic was given to me by a friend years ago, and it has a blade, screwdriver/can/bottle opener, corkscrew, tweezers and toothpick in a tidy little package. The ZT0560 is a big, sturdy knife and it also was given to me by a friend - and it has just been my favorite folder since I have had it.

Usually I take my JK Kephart, or more recently, the Small Simple Scandi - just because they work well and don't take up much space.

Tricky question I guess for everyone as I know I change my arrangement every few days. I have sold a lot of knives off but saved some favorites.
1) survival, I would choose my ml kephart as it is my current favorite as far a survival IMO goes. Had this one for a while and usually use it in the kitchen or butchering but love it for the survival situation. Also a fan of my good old cold steel bushman

2) Hunting - I use either my usa schrade 980t ( great for small or large game) and a russell Green river blank I put handles on mostly to do the butchering after hunting.

3) EDC knife - well for work its a combo of a JK LRK PLUS I recently aquired and put handles on and a vic hiker I try to keep the two together.

and EDC while not at work its one of these two depending on situation and the VIC hiker as well ornage Delica and or a schrade 896k

4) Hiking/ bumming around the woods again the Vic hiker as always and usually this mora never lost ( same as mora 2000) just orange. very thin blade very comfortable handle awesome in the hand.

All of these combos change daily it seems just to fit the needs of what I think I may be doing that day.
Sorry I posted pictures I had glanced above and thought everyone else did, sorry Im a dummy

1) What knife would you choose as a survival knife?

The meaning of the term survival gets debated a lot. I think most consider it to be a larger, do everything with it kind of knife. I think a camp or kephart style knife would fill that role well, although I personally haven't considered a "survival" knife for myself. I do think that my entry in this years design contest would fill the role well.

2) What knife do you use for hunting?

For deer season it's the Kentucky Woodsman, turkey hunting it's the Kentucky Fieldmate.

3) What is your EDC knife?

This recently changed for me. I was packing an Izula at work, and a Winchester 2991 with waterfall handles off duty. However I was recently sent a Case Sodbuster Jr. in a leather pocket sheath that I've been carrying everyday.

Here is the Winchester when I first got it, before cleaning it up a little with oil and steel wool.

4) Do you carry a certain knife while hiking or just bumming around in the woods?

Really just depends on what I'm planning to do or go.

What knife would you choose as a survival knife

The T-Rex is a semi large robust knife that can handle most things with a blade shape similar to a Kephart.

What knife do you use for hunting
when hunting I carry one of these as my field knife and a knife to do the skinning

With one of these depending on the size or type of game one of these

What is your EDC knife?

When not at work I usually carry a large folder or

Esee 4 or JK EDC Kephart

Esee 3 or Swamp Rat Howling Rat

Favorite hiking camping knives?

JK Kephart Or ML Kephart: *
Both JK and ML's are small and light and can handle most anything I need to do camp, chores to wood preparation.

Survival knife: my Phoenix. One of many knives I own. I designed it and have used it a lot. I know the knife won't let me down. As a back up knife, I'd have my BK2 or my MLL Wildland XL. I have a Knatchet too so the chopping is covered.

Hunting: not a hunter, yet going to learn. I bow hunted unsuccessfully many years ago and never got into it. This year I've been invited to grouse hunt and deer hunt, so I need to buy a couple guns and go out with my buddies. I'm looking forward to it. I'll take the D2 kephart I ordered years ago from SDS.

EDC: I am rarely without my Swiss Army knife. I've been carrying one of the campers or hikers daily for close to 20 years. I have 2 or 3 of them floating between bags, truck, and pocket. I also rotate a folder such as a Spyderco or ZT daily.

Hiking/camping knife: day hikes I will grab a hefty folder and my JK EWOK or my JK pocket scandi. Light, easy to hide so people on paths or trails don't freak out. I have a carry permit too, but I'm not always carrying. It depends where I go. People are convinced they are never in any danger and they tend to become alarmed when they see a pistol sticking out from under my sweatshirt or a knife dangling from my belt. It's not true, as recent events in the news have shown. Yet people always seem to think it will happen to someone else. Anyway, I'm off my soapbox, for now.
For camping I take my BK2, Phoenix, or a scandi bushcrafter I had custom made from a guy in Britian. It is seriously the sharpest knife I own and I have a bunch. I'll have to dig up a pic of it.
Fun thread!
