Fourth knife in a row that I have to return...

Here's what I found upon opening each box:

First - A CS Safe Maker II with a deformed sheath and a chipped edge.

Second - A CS Safe Keeper II with a completely blunt/rounded off tip

Third - A Spyderco Street Beat with a broken tip

Fourth (just a few minutes ago) - Another CS Safe Keeper II: The tip is a bit pointier...but it's also chipped in two places. About 1/2 cm of the tip was actually sticking out of the knife's box and it gave me a pretty painful prick when I took the knife box out of the shipping box.

I'm on the verge of raging here. I've only bought four knives in the past three months and all four have had issues. I bought the three CS knives directly from Amazon.com (making the return process easy, though for this one I'll talk to them directly to discuss the horrible packaging job) and the Street Beat from Cutlery Shoppe, so it's not like I've been using shady dealers.

I'm on the verge of giving up knives after all this crap. I mean, a bad CS is one thing (though three is pushing), but even a defective Spyderco?

/rant

Bleh...

sounds like you've had a terrible streak of bad luck. Maybe you should try buying a couple of blades in-store...perhaps that'll help break your streak.

Man, & I thought my day was ending bad because I have to work tomorrow . . . :) Almasy87, I can not speak for Amazon.com, have not used them, but I have bought several knives from Jeff @ The Cutlery Shoppe, along with some firestarters, signal mirrors, etc., & have never had a problem. I'm sure if you give him a call, he will take care of the problem rather quickly. In total, probably 15 to 18 different orders in the last year and a half, no problems so far. Hope everything works out on the other knives as well.
Be safe.
p.s.: Let us know if they get taken care of.

There aren't really any good stores near me though. The only place that I can reasonably get to only sells cheap Chinese knives with ridiculous markup. I'm pretty much stuck with buying knives online. I've been thinking about trying a Street Beat again since I know I'm much less likely to get a bad Spyderco than a bad CS, but all of this still makes me wary.

Also, a bit of an update about my current problem: I used a flashlight to look inside the shipping box and sure enough, there are a bunch of little marks where the tip is been hitting the inside of the shipping box. There's actually a mark on the outside too, which is probably how the tip got damaged. A mark on the outside...at some point during shipping, the knife actually pierced to the outside of the box. -_-

I returned it to Jeff and got a refund minus shipping (I had to pay return shipping as well). I don't count that (me losing money on shipping) against him, though, since his margins have to be pretty slim with those kinds of prices. As for Amazon, I've been buying from there for years considering it's pretty much the biggest online store. Packaging is sometimes questionable (thought I've purchased a computer monitor and two gaming consoles from them and they were packaged very well), but otherwise they've very good. Prices are usually competitive and the returns process is easy should you need it.

almasy87, I recently purchased my first ESEE knife from Howe's Knife Shop in Michigan (989.739.4320). I know he is a stocking Spyderco dealer, & my ESEE was ordered on Friday afternoon & was at my p/o Monday morning. It was packed, & I mean packed, so there was no movement at all. Might be worth 5 minutes to give him a call just to check and see if he can help you out. Good luck.
Be safe.
p.s.: All his orders are free USPS shipping.

Time to find a new knife source, i hate when a seller doesn't take the time to package the items correctly. We all have our bad days. I hope yours gets better friend.

Deal with knifecenter, knifeworks, knifeconnection, knives ship free ....

I haven't had one problem with them ... never dealt with Amazon.

That is some really bad luck! I've never has a problem with a delivered knife. All I can say is follow up with the sender and get it replaced. Most vendors know that it is in their best interest to package well. A good packaging job costs a lot less than a repaclement knife (at least thy kind I buy).

I never had any sub par products from Amazon.com after purchasing items for years. Did you by any chance buy these knives used?

Not at all. I always buy new and directly from Amazon (never from any third party sellers).

It's weird. I've bought video game consoles, video games, a computer monitor, DVDs, and other random junk from Amazon without any issues, but the second I start buying knives, they all have something wrong.

Wow, that's really strange/bad luck. I've bought quite a few knives from Amazon and have never had any problems like those you describe. I have had to return a couple due to problems that originated at the factory (a Byrd Raven with a liner lock that was slipping off the opposite side of the tang, a Benchmade 940 with a pivot that wouldn't stay tight and had blade play even when fully tightened), but never knives that were flat-out damaged like those you describe.

The one possibly relevant difference I can see is that all of the knives I've ordered from Amazon have been folders, whereas the ones you've ordered have been fixed blades. From what you've described, especially with the third CS knife, it sounds like Amazon may have some issues with properly storing/moving/packaging fixed blades so that they don't sustain edge damage or cause a hazard during shipping.

(I can't comment on the Cutlery Shoppe since my first order with them was very recent -- it's in transit right now. But from everything I've heard they're great folks to to deal with, and Jeff was extremely helpful and quick to reply when I emailed him with a question about my order.)

Sorry about the bad news.

I suspect, like many stores at this time of year, Amazon is flooded with temporary workers who have not been trained properly.

Still, no excuse for the crap you received. Hope things work out.

Weird all of my spyderco fixed blades have come with a tip protector like this.

The Street Beat I received did, which made it all the more confusing. The knife also had black plastic shavings on it (from the sheath, I assume) despite the fact that it ships in a cardboard sleeve. It's my guess that somewhere down the line (whether at Cutlery Shoppe or Spyderco) a return accidentally got mixed in with the new knives. Jeff packaged in well, so that wasn't an issue.

I do know that Jeff is willing to inspect knives before he ships them out (I'm sure a lot of smaller stores would do this), so if I decide to try another Street Beat, I'll just have to be sure to ask him to make sure it's OK before sending it.

That's weird man.

Bummer!

Good luck with the replacement. Trust me, the Street Beat is worth the trouble.

I haven't left home without mine in over a year now.

Yeah, my $$ is on an issue w/an Amazon supplier issue w/regard to the CS knives. I'm an admitted CS fan, and I'm unaware of any issues w/the Safe Keeper or Safe Maker series in either the large or small sizes. CS has even been known to hold off on production and sales of an advertised model or two, as they did this year, including the "new" Voyagers (their most popular sellers), b/c the suppliers couldn't get the product up to spec. They skipped a year and became 2011 models.

If you DO in fact come up w/some evidence that it's a manufacturing issue as opposed to a shipping/storage issue, let CS know about it. Contrary to popular belief, they actually care about stuff like that. They may be considered a "large" knife company by some, but a large knife company is still a really small company.

I'd be livid, too, though. Sorry about your run of crappy luck; let us know what happens.

If you bought them all from the same place, you might want to consider finding another dealer.

Indeed. Buying from Amazon is not worth the effort at all. Yes, they will return your item with no questions asked - but sometimes that extra $2 you save ends up costing $7 in shipping, not to mention lost time.

I like Amazon and my latest purchase saved me closer to $20 than $2 (and that was just spending $50), since I've never had a problem with Amazon I'll stick with them. I have once had a package not arrive, but Amazon resent it at no cost to me.

But I've also had good dealings with Knivesshipfree, Knife Center, New Graham Knives & Ragweed Forge.
