Fourth knife in a row that I have to return...

Maybe you should find a different seller? Or maybe it's karma -- have you screwed anyone over lately?

.....The knife also had black plastic shavings on it (from the sheath, I assume) despite the fact that it ships in a cardboard sleeve. It's my guess that somewhere down the line (whether at Cutlery Shoppe or Spyderco) a return accidentally got mixed in with the new knives. Jeff packaged in well, so that wasn't an issue.

The Street Beat is the oddest of the list considering how it is packaged and shipped. It also is shipped with a plastic tip protector, so those marks on the box should not have happened.
It's possilbe the shavings are from the tip protector, but it sounds more like the sheath.
I tend to think you're correct that it was a return that got shipped out without being inspected.

I know nothing is more annoying that having the fun of a new purchase ruined by receiving a sub-par item.

Hopefully you have used up your bad luck for the next couple of years.

I like Amazon and my latest purchase saved me closer to $20 than $2 (and that was just spending $50), since I've never had a problem with Amazon I'll stick with them. I have once had a package not arrive, but Amazon resent it at no cost to me.

I've bought numerous items, including my Street Beat, from Amazon.
Amazon is always worth a look for common production items. Prices are usually decent and frequently you find a real bargain. Normally I only buy knives SHIPPED FROM AND SOLD BY AMAZON, so I've got free delivery and free return shipping if there is a problem, but I"ve never had a problem with any knife purchase.

You are not the only one. I had this issue a few months ago. I had a caly 3 come with terrible play in the lock, a superhawk with some weird black "smudge on the blade" ( still don't know what thats all about) and a custom that had a sheath wrapped in newspaper, that when unpacked removed some of the stain. But then again this seems to be a recurring issue for me in all aspects of my life. I just chalk it up to bad luck and move forward.
Don't give up, just keep going. It has to get good at some point. Right?

But I've also had good dealings with Knivesshipfree, Knife Center, New Graham Knives & Ragweed Forge.

You get what you pay for.

There is always an exception to the rule. I've read lots on how some Amazon knives need to be returned/exhcange for damage or other issues. I've only ever purchased one knife from Amazon and it was a kitchen knife. Having so many great stores and knowledgeable people available to buy from, that is the route I'd prefer.

I've heard the same thing.
