Thanks for rounding this out Yvsa. Now I'm curious. Did that 17-1/4" FF at 27 oz. come from a DOTD? Or was it a prototype that I missed? Was it also chandan?

Thanks for any info. Your black walnut "perfect" FF sounds wonderful BTW!

Norm

Norm the best I can remember it was another prototype but I'm not really sure. For awhile there the Foxy Follys were coming at me right and left and I was having so much fun I really wasn't paying attention.:o
I just wish I had half your capacity for remembering things!  :D
And I don't believe it's Chandan and I just happened to notice it has a slight crack starting at the bolster and going up about 1-1/4 inches.:(
A little sanding with some superglue would fix it right up though. If I were to keep it I'd have to take the handle down a bit, it's a really fat handle!

My "Black Walnut" "Perfect" Foxy Folly is indeed wonderful for me although it wouldn't be for all of you ham fisted guys. THe 4 inch handle would be way too short! ;)

What's weird to me is that I would've sworn I had another FF that came in with a lighter colored handle that was 5" long but I've looked high and low and can't find it anywhere, as yet anyway.:grumpy:
Our house is a dinky little thing but it eats and hides things all the time. Maybe if we didn't have so much crap things would be easier to find. :D ;)

Thanks very much Yvsa. Offhand, and not to say that you could not be correct, but I would say it probably wasn't a prototype as those seemed to be coming in pairs, all from either Sher or Bura. The first two 17" heavy pair from Sher, then the 21" pair from Bura, and then the final pair to spec from Bura that Dan Koster announced. I snagged one of those first ones as well about 8 p.m. at night when they were posted. Then the gates opened, and we had them in all sorts of handle materials for a while.

My only minor regret is that mine are all in chandan, except for the original in horn. Dave Rishar has one that is really a nice looking light wood, I'm guessing Kapur?, and someday I hope to get one in that handle material at 17" and 28 oz.

Norm,
Thanks for a truly great history of the Foxy's Folly! I saved that for my files for future reference.

Berk, I hope you're still monitoring this thread. Part of the problem of writing minor history is completely distorting it.

I corrected the post above with dates and some more factual info. Seems the two 17" prototypes that went to Dan and Yvsa were the first pair of the new run, by Sher, not the second pair by Bura. Somehow I had them transposed, but in checking my posts found the error easily. I apologize for the confusion, and I'm _sure_ everything is perfect now. ;) :D

You know, in retrospect when we got those very first two in February of 2005, if we had just said "perfect!, now drop 4 ounces" we would have been right there and saved a lot of time and trouble. Took 6 more months for the "right" ones to come in, which was a year from the time Yvsa posted about bringing them back.

Norm,
OK, I saved the revised version:thumbup: BTW, if there hadn't been so much variation, I wouldn't have my 21"/24 oz. Foxy Fighter, which is my favorite version!:D

Those are very nice, with a great length / weight ratio, just like this one Sassas snagged. But with one at the same length at only a few oz. more just couldn't talk myself into it. Not that I had much of a chance, as the ones that came in went in seconds it seemed like.

I don't know how this fits into the Foxy Folly saga.....
I have one of the early in spec examples by Sher, except it has a habaki bolster and brass fittings. The handle is white saatisal:looks like oak to me.
The handle is pretty fat but it fits me fine since I have fairly large hands.

If I remember correctly there were four of these, two with chandan handles and two with white saatisal. They were all made by Sher, and all had the habaki bolsters and brass fittings.

Yup, Norm is spot on methinks.
The very first full sized one I got was defective with a soft spot right in the center of the sweet spot.

mmm. softspot in sweet spot. that sounds familiar. happened to the only one i was able to snag; got sent back and traded for a fairly sweet gelbu special with white neem handles...

that big foxy up there. sigh. if i hadn't been camping for 3-4 days, i would've had a shot at it. was hoping to own a foxy or two (17/18 and 21) by now. no such luck. same with the YCS. sigh. someday.

time to collapse - camping was AMAZINGLY grueling. death camp.

I do remember those 4. They were nice knives. I corrected the monster history above to reference them. Took me a while to find them as it was Yvsa that posted the thread them. I was looking for Dan or Yangdu.

BTW, I can't find anything on the 25-27 oz. knives, but I know there were obviously at least a couple because Yvsa has one, and Dan refers to them, but can't find them at all. Must have been a couple snuck in on DOTD.

E-mail sent on the R-6 have a great 4th :D

I was waiting for someone to snag this! Quite a bit less than the first one, on sale. (I should have learned by now to _never_ by the first model of anything, as I always pay a premium.:confused:)

These are really great knives, and except for the R-5, the best of the R series IMO. BTW, there is still a very nice one sitting unsold from the 7/2 deals as well, with flowers around the handle pins for only $70.

Yeah, now I pay attention to it! Everyone's been looking at the FF for the past couple of days. Isn't that the first Uddha by someone other than Bura? I think so. Vim is about my new favorite Kami. Despite his miss on the one crow knife, his other work seems to have been very good. Nice lines and upswept tip on that one, and a fair price.

Abaniko, welcome to the forum, and please let us know how you like it.

To be pedantic and because I am keeping a record, I'll say that this is the 3rd Uddha sword by Vim. :)

I'll also say this is the first in Bijayasal. The least expensive so far (although others have sold for the same price) and on the lighter end of the Uddha scale.

Eric.
