Fowler Fighter Stolen At Blade

I hope the SOB who took it, slices off something needed for urination.

I was fortunate enough to get to handle this knife at the show while talking with Ed for a few minutes. It is a great knife and I hope that it is recovered. It is a shame when something like this happens.
I saw several makers that had left their tables unattended with knives out. We did it too. If you get a handful of people standing around your table looking at knives, it can happen right in front of you. I guess I am surprised that more of it doesn't happen. We use the red dot system and it really helps you to know when a knife is off the table. We also don't mind watching a neighbors table for a while so they can take a break. Just have to do what you can and take your chances.
I would agree with Ed that more security is not the answer. Watching out for each other, when you can, could be a big help in preventing this kind of thing from happening.

Ed - I have always admired your knives. I hope that it gets returned to you soon, and in perfect shape. The thief will not profit from this dastardly act, and whether caught or not, he will ultimately pay.
Dave.

Besides my condolences to Ed, and the hope that the knife is recovered, and the thief is caught, is that his reaction here in this thread shows that Ed Fowler is the kind of Gentleman we should teach our children to admire.

I could not agree more. I was talking with someone today and told them that the knife community is one of the few places left where a man's word is still his bond and 99.9% of the time you will get nothing but honesty.

That is terrible and I absolutely DESPISE Theives... had a few things stolen f/me in the past and it leaves a horrible and desperate feeling for a long while.

It's really hard when you show trust to people only to be burned by that someone whom you've put your trust in.

Perhaps there are video survielence (sp?) or some other means to go back and at least establish an identity of the theif. Perhaps when they catch him/her they could use the knife in question to cut off the hand that stole it. Wouldn't that be justice... ;)

I think what bothers me most about this theft, besides the fact that Ed is a dear friend.
But, he's not only a friend to me, but the whole knife community. Most knife makers I know are perfectly willing to share what they know with anyone who asks or shows an interest. Ed Fowler more than most. Thus the Knife Talk articles in Blade magazine, his books, his videos, his forum, he's there. His years of testing he'll gladly share with you, just for the price of asking.

Now the thief, knew who Ed Fowler was, knew what kind of a man he is and all he's done. But, it didn't matter at all, he had a chance to steal a knife, and he took it. I doubt the thief will have one second of guilt. I also doubt that the theft will change one bit who Ed Fowler is or how he lives his life. There's a lot to admire about Ed.

You're right Phil. For Ed to think that a prankster was just foolin' around rather than considering a thief in the midst shows you the trust the man has in people. Let's re-examine Ed's new markings on the blade as shown on page one of this thread and hopefully it will lead to exposing a thief or at least prevent them from benefiting from it.

Exactly, there is only ONE of Ed's Fighting Knives out there with the marking EAF 08. So if you see it or hear about it, there's no doubt...that is the Stolen Knife....and you're probably looking at the Thief.

I know this is of little consolation, but one thought i have been having is the question of insurance, either the Blade Show, (..if there is such a thing available to promoters or vendors.)
Or, through homeowners insurance, ..some "claim" avenue? ..tax loss, (deduction) on self-employment income?

I agree with Dave. Very few of us are conscienceless. The joy of profane treasure will ultimately unleash the curse of self-loathing, which, in turn, re-indicts him as the wretch he is with every glance into the mirror. Judas got his 30 pieces of silver and Jesus got the spikes, but who suffered the most?

Don't get me wrong, personal misery is insufficient punishment, which should include full restitution and some hard time in the gulag.

It is sad to hear about thievery but I guess they consider an event like Blade to be a perfect venue to operate.

I was talking to PJ Tomes about a knife I have of his and he reached for a similar knife to show me the model. It wasn't where he thought it should be and he initially said someone stole it. He was then looking for it so I am not sure if it was stolen or misplaced at his table.

Hopefully the thief(thieves) will get what they deserve.

Peter

All F'in thieves must die... What a shame, it's a real beaut and looks like Ed spent a lot of time making her. Hopefully the knife is returned and the criminal pays for his crime.

Sad story. Mr Fowler, I hope you get your knife back.

And I hope the thief catches some terrible disease!

Regards,

Jos

I had a camera lifted off Mace's table. Looked for it for hours not wanting to admit that it was taken and not wanting to admit that some loathsome character would walk into such a room with that intent. The fact is, if someone did, there is a lot to be had at Blade for such a low life.

I enjoyed talking to Ed at the show and as upset to hear about the theft. As far as my camera goes, it's replaceable. As far as Ed's knife goes, one of a kind is one of a kind.

If it turns out to be the same person who did both crimes, he's in for a shock. The last picture I took was of Mace. It just might scare the guy to death!!

Ed, that just plain sucks. I hope the theif realizes the error of his ways and returns the knife. I hate to hear these kinds of stories, they don't fit in our world (knifemakers)
