Fox Folly - Pics & Review by DK

Dan,

I have to agree with you on the grip length. I like 2 fingers behind the ring also. To achieve this I think the grip needs to be about 1/4 inch longer - or 4.5 inches minimum. I use a large glove size.

If HI will not do this, I think I"ll stick with just one on the order. Everything else about it looks good though.

THose are great pics Dan. The grip that is on my BIG sized Folly looks to be about the same as the one you have there. I love the thing looks wise but have a hard time being comfortable useing it because it fits my hand like the one in your pics and you have to be comfortable at 3.5 pounds. Glad the weight came in close. I would think that they should be able to "shave' a few more ounces off of it. What do you think of the weight issue with the one you have in hand Dan?

Dan - Did I just see you at a bike rally in Fayetteville on the Discovery channel? If not...there is a guy there that looks exactly like you!

Thanks for the pics. Great job as usual, Dan.

I kinda like the fireplug handle, but then again I think I came out near mason-jar size in the grip diameter contest ;) Certainly the top horn could be moderated a bit. Since it looks true to the original, I'll have to go home and play with the FF a bit.

Hmmmm....I wonder. With the blade balanced so far forward, should the way you swing it prevent the butt from digging in? I wonder what the kamis think of this one - if its in the "Idiot Westerners Will Buy Anything" category. Off to play with the FF!

Hey, I like a big khukuri. If you want to sell me one of those prototypes, you can keep the skinnier one they were going to send me.....

I can only imagine what one of these will look like after a good etch and some battle scars.

Hopefully, I won't be imagining for very long. :)

Dang...how'd I miss that?!?

Yes, that's me. And probably my son on my shoulders, right? Had the two competitors sign my shirt - same one I had at the MWKK04. ;)

(off to check Discovery Channel for scheduling....hope it comes on again)

hdwrlover - I'm not going to ask for a longer handle on this one.....just smaller diameter (something that's easy to control).

Mark - it is definitely a bit too heavy. I do think they'll be able to take some beef off the blade, which will bring the balance point back an inch or so. It'll be 20% lighter, but will feel 40% better.

Tohatchi - when I gripped the FF the way it's supposed to be held, the buttplate did not dig into my hand while chopping. I'm still learning the grip, so to speak. Giving it time....

I bet Bruise and I (and the other hobbits) could still make that handle work well with two fingers behind the ring. ;)

Thank goodness...I was feeling sorry for the guy! ;) :) :D

so were the traditional ff handles meant to be gripped with the ring between the pinky and ring finger? or did the smaller handed nepalis gripped it between the middle and ring finger? i agree with your thought on gripping between the middle and ring finger being so more comfortable. since they are going to be made for people who have larger hands than the average nepalis, wouldn't it be possible to make the handle just a little bit longer if the traditional ff handles were meant to be gripped the way we like it?

when i signed up for the ff it was my understanding that it would sport a 5 inch handle. correct me if im wrong on this but if it is true then wouldn't a normal placement of the ring usually occurs in the middle of the handle and that should be fine for most of us to grip the ff comfortably betweeen our middle and ring finger.

also how does the profile of the handle look like when it is viewed from the top (looking down the spine) and the cross section? would it be possible for you and yvsa to recommend the handle to look like the nice kuks made by sgt karka these days? here a picture in an excellent post by norm.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=328414&highlight=bevy+bas

i find that the upper half of the ring when viewed from the top has a convex shape so comfortable in my hands. also an egg shaped profile of the handle that yvsa was talking about has many advantages over a handle that just has a round profile.

many would really like this run of the ff to be something not only beatiful but comfortable to use as well. this is not just going to be a wall hanger for me but something that begs to be used :)

First of all:

Dan, you have mail....

2nd, etc. The grip fits me fine, and is too specs, although I think it's a bit too large as well. Easy enough too take down on one knife but I wouldn't want too take it down on another, shouldn't have too.
Too further clarify the fit:
When I have mine in a grip with two fingers behind the ring my pinkie is still 1/4" away from the edge of the butt cap and the edge of my palm is just at the edge of the butt cap or a tad below.
Everyone used too say I had large hands and I believed it but that's before this younger race of giaants started coming along.  :p ;)

The weight is definitely an issue but for me as well and the mods I will make on it may remove enough to make it feel better too me.
I like a rounded spine and will do that too mine as well as fully convex Sher's almost convex edge.
I understand that term now.:D ;)
Actually mine runs from a fairly acute convex too a flat grind with a micro convexed edge. "Almost Convex" is a good way too describe it.;)

And by the time I slightly enlarge the cho which is already well formed and well made the weight on mine should be within specs too.

And my testing will have too wait until the weather clears up. It went from sunny and 79* too rainy and 44 degrees.
It isn't the cold but the wet that's stopping me today.:grumpy:
I am really anxious too try it out!!!! :D
And somewhat jealous that Dan has already been able too do so.;)

Well I said it wrong in my post above. The handle is 1/4" short of specs at 4-1/4" from the top angle of the bolster too the bottom of the butt cap and it was supposed too be 4-1/2 inches.
At 4-1/2" I think it would have fit Dan okay.

Edit:
Should have clarified that the link is too the original spec and sign up thread.

I've always put the little finger behind the ring. Seems to balance better for me.

Aye carumba... that thing looks huge

I'm dipping my hands in plant fertilizer tonight.

Great pics, Dan!!! The FF sure looks PURRTY!! Waiting for payment instruction.

Yvsa and Dan --> please make sure they do the grip to the 4.5 inch spec, not shorter and I think most of us will be happy with the grip length. If we can receive reasonable assurance on this spec, I will buy two.

Please rest assured everyone. Dan & I aren't ignoring anyone we're just communicating by email rather than hash things out on the board/forum.
Dan should have an announcement in a day or a few as I am going too let him handle the communication with Yangdu rather than having us all three going at it.
A lot easier that way and since Dan is handleing the money part anyway, well.....;)

With Yangdu being Uncle Bill's primary caretaker we have too do things as she is able. It will get done and I think too everyone's satisfaction.:D
Y'all are gonna love the shorter and meaner Foxy Folly!!!! :D

Good stuff, Dan, and thanks. If we can get Sher to knock off a quarter pound I think we are there. If the put their mind to a project they can pull it off very handily. I thought Sher did an exemplary job but we still have to fight the bigger is better syndrome which is very hard to beat.

If you can get the orders together we can place the order with some degree of confidence.

Thanks again for stellar help.
