I had read about the Fox "Golok Hitam Machete" and have looked off & on for a while trying to see where you can get one at.

I think I first read about it in a Tactical Knives article over a year ago (Jan 2007) "Fox Golok Hitam Jungle Knife" by Dr. Terry M trier. http://www.harrisoutdoorgroup.com/TKbackjan07.html

The knife looked impressive. Is anyone familiar with the Cobalt Vanadium SS N690Co Steel? With a length of 225 mm and 6 mm thick, the Golok appears to have a lot of it.

Unless you are in it seems Italy or speak Italian there seems to be none of these available. Another Italian Website

Has anyone seen these thing available? Has anyone used one?

AG Russel gives the composition as:

Steel __________Carbon____ Chromium____Vanadium _____ Cobalt
N690___________1.07 ________17.0 __________0.1_________1.50

Edge holding performance is said to be at the 440C / VG10 level.

Thanks for the tip on the steel.

I am still curious. I have found what might be the ??Offical?? Fox Website but it does not list the Golok (of which I am really interested in) or any of the Predator Series of knives. What is the story with FOX?

After seeing that article on the Golok 6+ months ago, I am surprised to not see the knife more readily available. :(

I was going to ask this same question. This looks like a very useful tool. Does anyone have one?

For reference, it appears the first wbesite did not have it in stock so I emailed http://www.frinchillucci.it/.

They mentioned that they will ship to the USA via "Poste Italiane Pacco Celere Internazionale". They specified that the delivery time is 3-4 days and cost approximately 50,00 Euros. From a payment standpoint, they said if you email them they can send a "pro-forma invoice" with exact prices.

From a conversion website the shipping is $64.74 USD and the Golok is $219.48 USD. $284.22 rough total based on my estimation! Now the real question, is it worth it!

By the way, the email was info@frinchillucci.it and the response came from fabio.pellegrini@frinchillucci.it

You can get a traditional forged golok from Valiant for a little more than the shipping costs of that one.

Thanks, but at this time I am interested in the Fox Golok. I am not one to really favor the traditional. I have handled one of the Fox Predator knives and a few Extrema Ratios - I do like the feel of the handle and the Fox Golok is of a similar construction.

Just curious, the http://www.foxcutlery.com/ website does not list the Golok or the Predator as one of their knives. Plus I could not find any knives on their website made of N690Co, most of their knives seem to be 440A or B.

I cannot believe these are out of production already. Tactical Knives did that article in their Jan-2007 mag, although they way they operate that was over 6 months ago (since I got their May-2007 article a week or so ago!)

Are these out of production or was it a partnership with someone like Extrema Ratio? I just emailed "info@foxcutlery.com" on their product line and the Tactical Knives editor "comments@harris-pub.com" on what the deal with this knife is. I'll post if I hear back.

The continuing saga…

I heard back from Tactical Knives and they reminded me that at the end of the magazine they referenced:
www.rukoproducts.com
info@rukoproducts.com
The also stated that Ruko Products had them at their 2007 SHOT show display.

I remember looking at the link, but when you are on Ruko Products website they do not show what Fox models they carry and when you click on that product it sends you to the Fox Cutlery website, which once again does not list the fox (I have yet to hear back from Fox on this).

So this time I emailed info@rukoproducts.com. They are more than happy to ship one, but the price is even higher, at $329. Wow. Now I am definately not sure if I want to dump that much money into a knife that has not seen any action on this forum.

Does that price from Ruko include shipping? If so keep in mind that their price quote is most likely in Canadian dollars and if that is so the rate of exchange to U.S. dollars should take some of the sting out of it. For this kind of money you could probably get Justin at Ranger knives to make one for you.

Ruko said that was the delivered price and that the knife was in there Buffalo, NY warehouse. I guess I assumed it was USD (if it was in CAD, it would be 280.74 USD, which I agree helps). I will double check with the.

Nice thought, though, on seeing what Justin can come up with, especially after I just received my for Ranger Knife today! :D

Fox used N690 for the Hossom Retribution folders they made for Ontario. Which I understand are discontinued already. They are supposed to be making Hossom N690 fixed blades for Spyderco.

The Retributions are not discontinued, just out of stock and likely to remain so for a couple months.

IMO N690 is very good steel, and most people who have tried it have been pleased with its performance. I would score its edge holding as a bit better than 440C and its toughness quite a bit better. VG-10 would probably be an apt comparison.

Edge holding in real life use can be difficult to pin down since much of what we call edge holding - or lack thereof - includes the effects of microchipping. N690 resists microchipping quite well. It makes a good chopper, and in fact my collaboration with Spyderco uses this steel for camp knives with blade sizes of 4-3/4" - 6" - 71/2" - 9".

Confirmed by email:
Thanks for the email. The price was in U.S. dollars and product is coming out of our Buffalo, NY address.

slightly off topic but Bark River makes a mean Golok too!

Ruko seems to be doing a lousy job of getting that knife out to dealers.

Agreed. 100%.

Especially since it appears Fox has a Military Division for which they have some pretty damn cool looking knives. They do not show these on there website but I found the below link...
http://www.azlame.it/public/dettaglio_commerciali.asp?commerciale=05&categoria=01

The Fox "STEALTH", "FIGHTING TOMAHAWK", "GOLOK HITAM MACHETE", "BLACK MILSPEC COATING - PREDATOR I" and "TRAKKER" look interesting. The Stealth is an interesting concept with a Titanium inner core and layers of Carbon Fiber bonded to the Titanium. Not sure how functional, but sounds cool

I finally scored a Fox Golok Fighter! I saw that MichiganKnives was selling them on E-bay and contacted Bill immediately. Figure's Bill would get some Fox'es eventually with all the other European models he gets his hands on... HP Klötzli, Extrema Ratio, etc.

This knife is definitely unique. More like a mini-tactical-machete. About halfway down the spine they thin it out on the upper side for some significant weight savings. For as thick as the tang is the knife is remarkably light and easy to swing around. I like it!

Pics to come very shortly!
